Can someone summarise for me what happens when a bald tyre is handed in to a garage for replacement?

Take the old tire off, put the new one on, balance it, fit it.

And charge you €5* for disposal of the old one, as permitted per waste regulations, unless you take it back.

    (* could be less).

Take wheel off the car, put wheel on a special machine with levers etc that get between the tyre and the wheel and work the tyre off the wheel. Put new tyre over wheel and machine again works the tyre onto the wheel rim. Pump up, balance the wheel and tyre assembly with tiny little weights then put it back on the car.

    I'm pretty sure it's €2.50

It actually varies quite a lot depending on tire size. Saw the prices a tire shop is being charged for disposal of old wheels, and can swing from 2 euro to 7.

    Didn't know that.

The reason I said €2.50 is my local tyre shop normally charges €15 a corner to fit tyres or €12.50 without disposal. These would be pretty big tyres too.
