So what have we in the Christianity forum this week.. Debate on Celibacy.. The Protestant/Catholic debate top of the forum and a Pinecone has appeared..

Anyway I would like to open a thread on the 2nd century of Christianity.
Please keep it to historical facts..

So what have to to discuss, well in the 2nd centuary we see the church form with a structure. Bishops, Priests, Deacons. Ignatius of Antioch and the Didache speak of the three

There were many heresies in this Century.

Very interesting about this century for me are the writings of Saint Irenaeus, 3rd Generation to John the Apostle.

I saw a post from PDN regarding Bishops/Priests in the 2nd Centuary as "false titles can become established very quickly".. So are to to take it that Saint Irenaeus was a heretic? I would tend to disagree, after all he was defending a faith that people had died for.

Anyway there is lots to discuss about the 2nd Century. But lets try and not make it a denomination debate..

Are you planning twenty of these threads - each covering a Century of history?

Unfortunately every one of them could turn into a thinly disguised Protestant/Catholic spat. :(

The further I get away from the 1st century the less I know about Christian history. I'm unsure if that's ironic or not.

I think one of the reasons that we all keep talking past one another, with little genuine discussion, is that we tend to think of people as either saints or heretics.

Rather I believe we have historical records of people who attempted to follow Christ and, like all of us, sometimes they got it right and sometimes they got it wrong. So Irenaeus (and Tertullian, Augustine, Luther, Wesley etc) were neither wholly perfect nor wholly evil and deceived. I serve in the higher executive levels of an international denomination with millions of members, and I know firsthand how even among good sincere Christian leaders there are still all kinds of personal agendas, political pressures etc (a good friend of mine who is a CoI Bishop assures me that he goes through the same stuff). So, in Irenaeus' case, I believe he was a sincere Christian who was sincerely wrong on the issue of separating clergy as priests distinct from the laity.

well lets have the discussion. I see a post above about not knowing about Christian history.

We need to know about our history as best we can to understand our faith.

All christian communities had bishops/priests/deacons in the 2nd centuary from the records that exist. Its what i have learned from what I have studied,, but I am open to other opinions.
