It's not for me, its for my brother - who's going back to college as a mature student.
He completed a higher cert in Business 2 years ago in GMIT at level 6, he hated it so never completed the third year, and now has been accepted into Sligo I.T doing a completely different course.

He has been denied a grant .. which he really really needs as theres no way in hell he can afford it.. so no college for him.

This is what he was sent out:

"In accordance with Articles 14 to 17 of the student grant scheme 2011, i regret that you are not eligible for funding for year 1 of your course!

Then they have enclosed an extract from the student grant scheme, highlighting the progression rules.

Can anyone shed any light on this to me? Ive been staring at the computer screen for ages trying to find some way around it.. but none of it makes any sense to me now.

I feel so bad for him as I get full grant. It's just not fair.

He will not get grant aid for first year of this course, i am presuming it is a level 7 course, new rules state that grant aid is available for a total of 4 years for higher cert and level 7 i.e. your brother completed a 2 year cert, got his qualification but if he continued on and did an add on year to gain an ordinary degree, then he would get grant for this year. As he intends to start at year one doing a new level 7 course, then the first year will not be grant aided, but the next 2 will be which gives a total of 4 years funding combined for cert and level 7. Hope this makes sense.
