I was hoping i could get some help from you well traveled vets. I want to take my girlfriend away after Christmas around the end of January. Im stumped as to where though. Ideally it would be someplace thats not crazy filled with pubs and clubs, but more relaxed with nice sights, restaurants, great architecture and such. She hinted at Paris so maybe thats a starting point. Can anyone suggest a nice hotel in Paris? Also maybe some activities to do there? Any help would be great for me. Thanks

Im not very well travelled, but I didn't really like Paris. I would recommend London any day. Ive only been there twice but I loved it both times. There is so much to see and do. However, its doesn't have the nicest reputation lately :D

Cheers, i was in paris before and wasnt overly impressed. In saying that i was slap bang in tourist ville so i didnt expect too much. I visited London a few times also and just didnt get a nice vibe from the place, i could quite put my finger on it. It felt like i was still in Dublin in some ways. I want something quite different to unwind for a weekend and not being follow the hordes of tourists snapping pics of attractions. Something more tranquil and peaceful to unwind after Christmas

What about Rome? Great food, culture, atmosphere & romantic.

I heard that Sevilla is supposed to be a great destination for a short break if you aren't into anything wild. Lovely food, romantic architecture and doesn't get too cold in the winter.

I would second that. I went to Rome in January 2009 and thought it was fab. We had lovely weather and there is so much to see and do. Also loved krakow and venice.:)

I was in Barcelona recently and it was beautiful, loads to see and do, great food all over the place and wonderful people (except the pickpocketers - we didn't get stung but you would need to keep your eyes open). We stayed a bit outside of the centre in a sc apt and found the underground brilliant for getting around.

Rome is lovely! Really romantic and a beautiful city!!! Nice food too! Stockholm is a great city too!

I love relaxation breaks and with a view to achieving this, I've found that week-day travel is the most important ingredient. It's at week-ends that tourist figures really swell. Paris in January would be a little too cold for me, but hotel prices (generally high) would be more tempting. I'd possibly opt for Rome or Seville.

Reading up on the city beforehand it important and never arrive with huge expectations! Cities are like people. You'll bond better with some more than others. You may even be a couple with different tastes!

Riga is quite nice. Very reasonable to, with direct flights from Dublin.

I loved Krakow, the homeplace of St John Paul II

    London is good.
