419 Scam Baiting

How, in the name of all that is Boards.ie, do we not have a forum, or sub forum for 419 scam Baiters here? I do know there is a 419eater site, but I'm a Boardsie, and like to keep things local.

Recently, I got a bogey text from someone claiming to be from Nokia, telling me I have "won £900,000 pounds."

I decided I'd rip the piss a bit, and emailed the link, from an email address that I never really use.

I have posted below the emails. Obviously, I have removed any email addresses and phone numbers, so I don't get some enterprising body on here ruining it for me. And my name is not Gareth Gibbs.

Man he was quick to get back to me. I sent it at 20:00 and he was back to me by 20:07. I'm just wondering was it automatically generated, and will they pick up the email I replied with.

This is what I originally sent:

    Hi There.

I'm emailing to claim my £900,000 pounds! Oh my god I can't believe it. Here I am, lying in hospital, with a bill coming to €9,000, wondering how I'm going to pay for it, and I win £900,000 pounds!

How do I get this, is it a cheque? Or do I get it in cash?

    Regards

    Gareth Gibbs

    And he replied with:

This is to officially inform you that your winnings from Nokia have
been loaded into an ATM VISA CARD (ATM Card Number (4247690300768241)
in your favor by Nokia Lottery Commission.
Your Personal Identification Number is 4301. The ATM VISA CARD Value
is NINE HUNDRED THOUSAND GBP (900,000.00 Pounds) You are advice to
contact our Affiliate Courier Company with the information below since
the delivery man is waiting instruction from the courier company
    Parcel Flight Courier Company.

Note: The only fees you have to pay to the Delivery Man is the
delivery fee of €300.00, contact the delivery man via email
XXXXXXXX as soon as possible to make the payment of the
€300.00 and arrangement on how to deliver your ATM VISA CARD and
required documents for you to sign.
You have to furnish us your details such as Full Names, Delivery
Address and Telephone Number so that we can arrange the delivery of
your ATM VISA CARD directly to you upon receipt of the fee of €300.00
    so those information are required;
    Delivery Person: Michael Westbrook
    Email: XXXXXXX
    Telephone Number: XXXXXXXXX
    Regards
    John Wintherspoon
    Head of Courier Services
    Parcel Flight Courier Company

    I then replied with:

Thanks for your quick reply Mr Winterbottom.

Is it ok if I email Mr Westbrook, as I cannot ring him. I don't want the phone signal to interfere with the equipment here in the Intensive Care unit.

I was in an accident a couple of weeks ago, a couple of beer kegs fell on me, and damaged my spinus erectus, and I had to have major surgery to straighten my erectus, as it was swollen and to the left. Thankfully this is ok now, but I remain unable to walk because of the hardness.

    Regards

I'm really hoping I can string them along a bit. I'll send a quick email now to the second email address that he sent me, and hopefully I'll get a reply.

Always play this song in the background when you're trolling these people. It makes it all so much more fulfilling :D

looks like an automatic response email

fair play to you OP, I enjoyed your reply, keep going :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,995 ✭✭✭Sofiztikated

Just replied to the second email address.

Also, did a bit of snooping on the contact number. It's a number in Atlanta, Georgia.

So I'm going to let it lie for tonight, time difference and that.

I thought it was a nice touch calling him Winterbottom instead of Wintherspoon. Just want to see if they pick up on it and correct me, or will they adjust the name to suit what I sent in.

Hoping I get a reply. :D Damn it, I want them to reply. I want my "£900,000 pounds". I wonder is that sterling or punt? Because if its punt, I don't really want it.

    Reply to second email address:

    Good evening Mr Westbrook

I have been advise by Mr Winterbottom to contact yourself to organise delivery of my winnings.

Unfortunately, as I explained to Mr Winterbottom, I cannot call the number, as I am in hospital, and I do not want the mobilar phone signals to interfere with the equipment here in the Intensive Care unit.

I was in an accident a couple of weeks ago.

How do we organise this? He said it would be on a visa card, but I'd prefer it to be cash, I'd like to like on a bed of money, and I'm sure it would make me feel a lot better!

I don't know, a hard erectus is a dangerous thing. Especially if its swollen and to the left.

their idiots if they believe you after the first email reply you sent, you could have made it a bit less obvious you were messing with them

there's a good chance they'll reply though as they've nothing to lose or the emails could just be automated

About 18 months ago I was selling a car of mine. Got contacted by this guy, and needless to say after his first mail I could see that things weren't quite right. I decided to have a bit of fun with him. It's a long read, but you might get a giggle or two. ;)

Below is how the mailing went:
    Name: Andrew

    Phone No: 00306941472990

    Email Address : andrews001002@hotmail.com

    Ref/URL: http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Golf/1.4/201006196896297/advert?channel=CARS

Comments: I AM INTERESTED IN BUYING YOUR CAR.GET BACK TO ME IF AVAILABLE
    .............................................................................................................................................
    Hi,

Just put the car up for sale yesterday so yes it is still available.
    .................................................................................................................................................
Thanks for the email. Please I have a client who is very much interested in buying your vehicle. He happened to budget for a car last time and unfortunately it was sold. I have discussed with him and he has agreed that he will be willing to have the vehicle shipped to greece upon reaching an agreement with you.

    1) Is the engine in perfect condition?
    2) How often do you service the Vehicle?
    3) How many miles on the Vehicle now?
    4) Are you the owners?
    5) If yes, for how long did you use Vehicle?
6)Finally At what price are you willing to sell this
    Vehicle to Us ...Bottom price.

    Thanks,
    ........................................................................................................................................
    Hi Andrew,

I appreciate your surprisingly prompt reply.

    1) The engine looks really perfect. It looks so perfect in fact, that I think you may offer more than my asking price, and that is before you even step foot in the car.
    2) I have hoovered the engine bay 3 times during my ownership. It has really good long life oil however, so it has never been changed. That oil will remain forever. That is why they name it long life.
    3) There is 119,950 miles on the vehicle right now. It drives as if there are only 116,370 on it though.
    4) Yes I am the owners.
    5) Since I answered yes to the above, I feel I must tell you I have used vehicle for just over 3 years.
    6) Since I have the vehicle listed at €2450, I expect to sell it for at least twice that amount. On closer inspection of the clean engine, I feel you may be overwhelmed and shall be unable to refuse such an offer.

    7) Thanks
    ........................................................................................................................................................

    Hello

I have forwarded your vehicle information to my client and after evaluation and due to time constraint on the fact that we are running short of time. I'm delighted to tell you that my client has recommended your vehicle, with full interest and he has instructed me to carry on with his transaction,he hopes the engine is serviced and oil changed too.He cant wait to see the vehicle parked in his garage. However,My client made out a certified cashiers check of(12,450euros) before he travelled to London on a business trip, for a previous vehicle and its shipment charges etc,but it was unfortunately sold. The amount on the check he deposited for the vehicle is bigger than what should be paid to you now,so the check is now meant for the total expenses which includes the purchase of your vehicle, the pick up of the vehicle from its present location and the shipping charges/other necessary shipping arrangements. However he has instructed us to carry on with this transaction. So you're required to deduct the cost of your vehicle (2,450euros)and send the balance of(10,000euros) to the Agent ( our shipper ) for him to be able to offset shipping & tax charges, and other cosmetic repair costs. After payment has reached you and balance sent to shipper, the shipper's agent will come for inspection, pick up (of vehicle & signing of title papers), make some cosmetic touches and drive to a prepaid shipper to be shipped to my customer.and also conclude other necessary shipping arrangements. So you dont have to bother yourself about the pick up and shipping arrangements. Please Confirm this and provide the below information for check payment to be delivered to you via fedex courier.

    Full Name......

    Full Home Address.....

    Phone Number..........

    Thanks,

    Hi Andrew,
This is super news! I am surprised that you spoke with your client in Greece so promptly. Modern technology is amazing however.

On further evaluation of my car, I believe the check I will receive for 12,450 euros is about right. You are a very good business persons. I believe your client will use you for many more trans-continental vehicular transactions. I have many friends in other countries who may be interested in being your client. What do you think?

On my calculation, there is about 17 different shipping agents involved. This must cost your client close to 30,000 euros. It is worth it though, as my Golf 1.4 engine has the power of 75 horses running through a field. In the summer.

Shipping should be easy as Limerick has an international port.

    Below are my details:

    Full Name...... John F. Kennedy

Full Home Address.......69 Rim Lane, Gullible Street, Vancouver, Ireland.

    Phone Number......087 007

    Thank.
    ........................................................................................................................................................
THE PHONE NUMBER YOU STATED WASN'T COMPLETE....Please Confirm this and provide the below information for check payment to be delivered to you via fedex courier.

    Full Name......

    Full Home Address.....

    Phone Number..........

    Thanks,
    ..........................................................................................................................................................
    Apologies Andy,

    That is my work number.

My own personal number is 1570 444 115. You may need to insert 00 353 before that however, it is international extension. Maybe 00353 570 444 115 .

My girlfriend Brenda may answer as she is living here too. She is very friendly so you should have no problems with her. Thanks.

If you cannot contact that number I look forward to our future conversations.

With a US phone number, chances are his first language is English.

I'm sure there are some choice words "As Gaeilge" he could use instead :)

I originally got it from an Irish number as well. I've reported the number to O2. Guessing it was just a random guess.
