    Hi,
This is the first time I am trying something like this so apologies in advance if I don't understand some things.

Basically I want to format my hard drive and install Windows XP, trouble is when I reboot my laptop from the windows XP disc I keep getting the message "Setup did not find any hard disc drives installed on your computer. Make sure any hard disc drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disc-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3"

I'm not really sure where to go from here so any help would be great. Thanks in advance

If the machine boots from the hard drive without any problems then the problem is the default drivers on the XP disk don't recognise your particular hard drive.

I've never done it but I believe you can slipstream drivers into the XP disc and create a new boot disk which should then recognise your hard drive.

Did your computer come with vista, win 7 initially?

you will probably need a driver disk - check the PC manufacturer web site for it
press F6 the instant the CD boot goes blue, you don't get asked to stick it in for ages...

check the BIOS / Setup for an option that changes SATA mode from AHCI to compatible (the names all vary)

    It came with Vista originally.

I have tried the custom slipstream disc but the disc wont boot when I start up my laptop and I cannot find any mention of the SATA mode in the BIOS either.

I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-NR38M if that's any help

I've tried this a couple of times, though it is over 4 years.
I think I used nlite at the time.

Basically XP had limited supported for SATA hard drive controllers, as IDE was de-facto technology at the time.

When I created the slipstream CD, I imported the relevant driver from the manufactures website, which was an .inf file, burnt the the OS and proceeded with the installation.

May I suggest in abolishing the idea of installing XP, it's a legacy system approaching it's life cycle. Whilst it's understandable, you having the need in ditching Vista, Win 7 is a far more polished system and whilst it's certainly an improvement, it's also an update, so hardware supported under Vista, should more than likely operate under Win 7.

You can obtain Win7 from software4students.ie for €45.
