I saw the fire engine and ambulances on the way home. I thought 2 luas's had crashed into each other, but it must have been just a second one stopped behind it.

I think it must have been at the cross over point on blackthorn ave, which I think is dangerous. You cycle along the cycle track and it abruptly ends with a barricade and you can cross the tracks with an extreme left turn. I nearly crashed the first time I came across this barricade, it was late at night and I was going at a handy pace not really looking out as it looks like cycletrack all the way along, I was also carelessly messing with stuff in my bag as I thought it was all clear. Then I suddenly see the barrier and veered onto the road, luckily no cars were going along, I didn't even realise there was a cross over point to the left until I was there weeks later. You can see through the barricade and it does look like it continues on in front. It should really have a big sign there down low to fully block the view, not just see through bars.

I can't see it on google maps, mustn't have been built then.

There was also a woman knocked over in sandyford this morning too, where the turn is to woodies. I didn't see it on any news though.

It was the cycle lane crossover, he slammed into the front of the tram and went over. The train hit the brakes couple of seconds before impact but to no avail, <snip>

Anyway he didn't look good poor chap, fair play to those who helped out.

Can I ask which direction he and the tram were going in?

With any incident of this nature please do not speculate over cause or fault

We were southbound, Not sure about him as I only looked up on impact, there were plenty of witness with all the usual traffic there

From this comment on the journal:
From what I could make out the cyclist was crossing from one cycle lane to another (yes, the people who designed the road their are that stupid that they would put half a cycle track on the right hand side of the tracks, and the other half on the left hand side).

It sounds like he was using the designated crossing for Bikes in Sandyford.

I commented on this cycle path last year before it was completed. In my view, as there is no continuation of the cycle path up to the roundabout, there is no reason for a path to even exist here. In fact, the current design simply drops cyclists onto the footpath around a blind left hand corner. They are then somehow meant to find their way back onto the road. Furthermore, the crossing appears lethal. I have never used it, but the sight of a series of chequered steel surfaces at angles to each other over the tracks doesn't inspire one with confidence in wet or icy conditions.

There is no reason no to use the road here and whoever designed that path has a lot to answer for.

I am not speculating as to the cause of the accident or apportioning blame to either Luas or cyclist, I am merely criticizing this design for creating a situation where an incident between a luas and a cyclist was probably likely to happen.

I hope the cyclist is ok and makes a full recovery.

The crossing is actaully made of rubber.

No a great design. However, I imagien a lot of cyclists, even experienced ones would be intimidated by the speed of traffic on Blackthorn Avenue.
