DVDFab has a 30 day full featured trial. It takes a bit of time but that is because the firmware on most optical drives deliberately slows down the read speed when a protected DVD is inserted.

With DVDFab you can rip to a variety of formats. You can also just copy the DVD which gives you an Audio TS folder and a Video TS folder. You can discard the Audio one and play the Video TS folder directly in VLC.

The avi file produced is smaller than the Video TS VOB files but the quality is fine on a screen, maybe not as good as the VOB files if you are using a HD screen.

Auto Gordian Knot is by far the best I think for .avi conversion. Its also known as AutoGK for short.
