Texas execution halted, violence is race related

Im not sure what to make of this one, and Texes of all places considering this as grounds of appeal:
Execution halted due to appeal that Black people are more likely to commit violent crime because they are.... black.

Wonder if I can do something and just claim "thats the white in me"
Bet the race card wont be used here for disguinishing between races.
His guilt is not in question, so he should fry for the murders I say.

His attorneys had asked both the Supreme Court and Texas Governor Rick Perry to halt the execution because of a psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence. Actually in Texas, I'm not sure he is even able to commute it, just give a delay that's all

That's not the basis of the appeal. That's what someone said at the trial, and someone saying that black people are more likely to reoffend during the trial, to a jury, is predisposing the jury to think of a permanent solution to the problem.

If I brought you to court and brought in a psychologist who said that people named Maruney were clinically speaking more likely not to understand things they post, it would be an unreasonable (although in this case accurate) thing to say. It's not speaking directly of you, it's speaking of people named Maruney, as though you are a monolithic group who act the same and using that information to prejudice the trial.

No, it's not about that.

The jury heard from a "professional" that black people were more likely to commit violent crime. They would likely take this at face value, and in the absence of any counter-argument or detailed look at it, it would influence their decision - if black people are factually more likely to commit violent crime, then it adds more credence to the prosecution's argument.

This would also influence sentencing because it means that some may consider that the guy is dangerous/evil by nature and cannot be rehabilitated.

When considering a sentence, the jury is asked in texas to consider whether the person will reoffend. A psychologist in that court said 'in my experience, black people reoffend more than white people'.

That's asking someone to consider skin colour when judging whether someone lives or dies\goes to a life in prison.

If you are black in America you ARE more likely to commit crime as you are more than likely going to be born a low class citizen into a bad neighbourhood and possibly a broken or violent family. Who's to blame for this? The criminal or the system? So if he can prove his crime was down to the states failure he might have something, i doubt it though.

An amazing piece of "fail" in terms of reading comprehension. They gave him the sentence because an expert witness claimed that him being black meant he was more likely to reoffend. FFS

In fairness, I do believe it's correct that on average black people score lower on IQ tests than white people, but sure Asians outscore us all, so we shouldn't be gloating!

IQ is not a thorough measure of intelligence. Inducing generalised IQs from a broad subset of society into a particular case renders it even less accurate. It's not a fair statement to say that Asian people have higher IQs than Europeans. Some do, some don't. Same applies to black people.

In this case, a "professional" witness claimed in court that black people are more likely to re-offend. This is not a fair statement because all black people are not the same. Until it can be proven that black people have a specific brain component that causes a certain behaviour that's not present in white people, people should not be spouting this rubbish in court.

If committing a crime is the standard, then many Americans - regardless of race - have committed crimes since lying on one's driver's license about height and weight are crimes as is driving over the speed limit.

Maybe in America but look a bit closer to home, How many black Africans are currently serving Life here ? I can only off hand recall one murder committed here by a black African, I life in a mixed area and all the trouble is committed by whites, Yes I have seen blacks fight but only twice in 8 years here and I see whites fighting on average twice a week here. Iv never seen my black Arab neighbours fight either although I find North African Arabs can be hot headed.

I have to agree. Irish people can be pretty good at violence and general scumbag behaviour.
