FETAC course after completing degree...

    Hi All,

I have just recently finished an Arts Degree in UCD and have been looking for work/internship as a media researcher but to no avail. I'm thinking now of doing a Diploma in Journalism and Media at CMI.

My question is, has anyone done a diploma at CMI and became employed after it? Also has anyone done a diploma after a degree to pump up their CV? I'm just afraid that it's a step backwards, or is it a case that any education is a bonus? I think I could add to my writing and research skills from this but it is alot of money so I am dubious...

    Thanks

Yes, you can do a lower level course after a degree, though you will not get grants for it.

However, be very careful about the course you are looking at. It is not a full FETAC award, just a component certificate for Writing Skills for Journalism, which is one module. The rest of the course is not FETAC, it is a CMI course.

It may well be a perfectly good course, but the FETAC component would not go any way towards getting you into third level if that is what you hoped to do. It claims to be recognised by HETAC, I have not studied that, but you need to be sure that the whole diploma is recognised, not just an aspect of it, in the same way the FETAC single component gives them the right to show the FETAC logo.

It depends on why you want to do the course. You would need to talk to people who have done it to know what the quality is like, or investigate further with employers to see do they recognise it.
