Starting problems 97 Laguna 1.8 8v Petrol

I'll start off with a bit of background history....

Two years ago I'd a problem where the engine would turn but not start and was told to clean the TDC sensor which sorted the problem for a year.

Last year had same starting problem so put in a brand new TDC sensor. That was perfect until a month ago when I'd starting problems again. I was recommended to cut the plugs and join the TDC directly which I did and that worked for a month.

Last sunday I went to Kinnitty to view the cannonball cars and when I went to go home the car wouldn't start. Starting it in gear wouldn't work, (used to when problem was there before), so I got a tow and it started instantly. Everyday since I've to get a tow and it starts instantly.

I've done a bit of googling (but never saved the web page and can't find it now!) but it said if the car starts instantly on a tow its a problem with the starter motor.

What do people think of this? The engine turns over but won't catch and it turns quick, then slows and can turn quick again on and off if I keep it turning........

However.....this morning the car started without a tow but about 20 mins later, sitting in traffic it just cut out. No warnings etc. It would not start when I turned the ignition, just kept turning the engine. Started when I put it into second gear and turned the ignition for 10 to 15 seconds.

    Has anyone any ideas/suggestions???

I have a new starter motor to collect but if it just stalled its probably not that.....mabey the new TDC sensor is faulty, faulty fuel pump relay, earthing problems, sensor problems??? Its doing my head in as can't take the car anywhere!

My old man had a laguna with the same problems. Apparently the fix was the power lead going to the HT leads? It corroded. Sorry I can't be of any help, but it was an easy enough fix with some duct tape... The car only needed to work a few months more anyways. It was the lead that supplies power to whatever drives the HT leads.

I'm probably describing it wrong, but those symptoms were the same. Same engine in fact! It was many a year ago and I didn't fix it with him so sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Check that the wires on the starter are tight.

Cheers lads....I've the car off the road for now as I won't have time until the 8th October to look at it so I'll do what ye suggest then. Thank fcek I've a second car I can use (needs taxing though!) or I'd be in trouble as the last thing I want to do is give it to someone to sort out as money is tight at the moment.

Ok had 15 mins spare yesterday evening so had a quick look at the car. I unplugged a few sensors and wiggled a few wires and it started. Took if for a spin and it ran perfectly. Left it idle and it didn't cut out. Turned it off and on 5 or 6 times and came back to the car an hour or two and it started fine.

Wouldn't start this morning! So it looks like trying each thing seperately and trying to start the car each time!

Sounds like crankshaft position sensor is faulty common enough prolem If your car is turning over on the key, then tat eliminates the starter motor. Best to get a diagnostic done and scope the signal from the sensor to check for correct (or any) waveform.

Thanks. I was thinking the same as you re. the starter motor. I've a new tdc sensor got but I had put a brand new one in in Aug '10 so mabey its gone faulty or there is a crack in the wire somewhere. Weather is good this week so might have a chance after work hopefully.

Ok, bit of an update if anyone interested!

Spent the 1 Oct on the car and eventually figured the TDC sensor was not getting power so I followed the wires all the way back to the ECU and snipped it there and put in fresh wire directly to the sensor and it seems to have cured all the problems. Have driven the car everyday since and its running perfectly. Just hope I haven't jinxed it now!
