"O'Connor a smart arsed brat", Hugh Farrelly

Was just reading Hugh Farrelly's article where he said James O'Connor came across as a smart arsed brat in the latest press conference. I hate this kind of arrogance in any sport, but the Aussies attitude reeks of arrogance. They have no respect for us, I hope the team in New Zealand are aware of this. I'm really angry. Cooper and O'Connor with their big smug heads on them thinking their it. O'Brien replacing Paul Wallace? WTF. Asking Kidney if he's picking his strongest team?

    You can read it here:

It doesn't matter what you win. You should always respect the opposition.

If they think all they have to do is show up to win they will get a big big shock.

The article doesn't give any quotes to back up the headline though so it's hard to know what to make of it.

O'Connor came across as a smart-arsed brat. The youngster had been punished by Deans and pilloried by the Press for missing the official squad announcement a few weeks ago due to a late night out, but that was no excuse for his display of petulance yesterday when questioned about his return to the team following an incident of his own making.

The sad thing is no matter how angry this makes the Irish we'll put up a good fight for maybe 50 mins and still get beat.

And you can be sure it'll be the likes of O'Connor who will be sticking the dagger in.

Oh for the likes of the Claw and his ilk to smack a few heads.

Maybe you should write a strongly worded letter or talk to Joe.

Honestly why get your knickers in a twist about a cocky young player (who has the skillz to back it up) being rude at a press conference. O'Connor in particular has had brushes with the press in the past so why give them the fodder? Clearly the press have the hump with them and that reeks from the article you linked.

I'm sure you could call Donnacha O'Callaghan a smart arsed brat as well. James O'Connor is a great player. I think we'll do very well to stay near Australia. They have a great team and are in form compared to us who have a good team who are not in form. It seems like you just hate O'Connor.

Wouldn't even waste my time reading it, Hugh Farrelly is doesn't have a clue hes a very poor journalist who just tries to pick out the faults of everything to try and make a good story.

That's not a quote showing how he came across as a smart arse. That's Farrellys opinion. If he was being petulant it should be straight forward to to illustrate this by telling us what he actually said.

Until I see a few quotes I'll be taking this lightly.

Who cares, them being arrogant is one of the few ways we may actually pull of a victory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,127 ✭✭✭colman1212

This thread is completely pointless unless someone actually knows what James O'Connor said at the press conference.

I think it was something along the lines of "Justin Bieber ain't got sh*t on me" and implied that he was a better dancer than Earls and a better dresser than Bowe.

    :pac::pac:

He did acknowledge that Kearney's "Blue Steel" pout was world class though.

Tomas O'Leary's Blue Steel is frigging awesome though. Seriously.

I think Mr. Farrelly is reading too much into things.

    Robbie Deans? Terse?
When has he ever been anything else?

You know what annoys me about the article, is the whole fact that Farrelly is complaining about the opposition struggling to know Irish names... That they don't rate them... Did it ever occur to Farrelly that Deans and Co., even if they were very aware of the Irish opposition (which, I have no doubt in my mind, they've done their fair share of video analysis) they are gonna hardly preach to their standards prior to the game, and therefor instill some false sense of Ireland being a tough opposition...

This kind of thing should be kept for AFTER a match. A mistake the Irish management constantly make. Bigging up Italy prior to the match in the last 6N proved near disastrous.

Maybe Ireland should take a leaf (albeit small) out of NZ and Oz's book, and in press conferences totally play down the opposition. They should try this: "Cooper who? Oh yeah.. We saw a bit of him in the Super 15.. Didn't catch much of him though, too many early mornings... We'll see what he's like on the day." At the very least it might ruffle some feathers! But instead we're already acknowledging our ultimate defeat.

Don't get me wrong, I think one of the main issues with the 2007 campaign was the self-confidence that put their heads in the wrong place.. But you've got to play these mind-games a bit, as I have no doubt that opposition in some way is listening to your Press Conferences

I would love Kidney to ****ing care a bit though. "We'll see what happens" shiete is numbing. **** Australia let's rip these ****ers heads off and stand all over these ****ing Monarchy obsessed arrogant bastards.
Quade Cooper? Imagine that guy in Thomond Park he'd get some reception. Fancy dans would and have crumbled under pressure.

Tbh I've never seen a more biased journalist than Farrelly, in my opinion, I've rarely ever seen him bet against Ireland regardless of the circumstances, a bit of realism never went astray. I wouldn't read to much into player's attitudes at a press conference, it'll be all irrelevant after tomorrow's game do the talking on the pitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,978 ✭✭✭✭irishbucsfan

I love the fact that O'Connor's petulant comments are so "smart-arsed" that Farrelly has neglected to print what he said. Maybe if I actually knew what was said I might have a bit more faith in him.

I'd say it's a possibility that Farrelly or a mate asked a stupid question about the incident and O'Connor made him look bad in front of his peers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 686 ✭✭✭Flincher

Everyone knows the Aussies are supremely confident in their own ability, almost by nature. I'd forgive a 21 year old version, who is arguably one of the top few players in the world, for being a little up his own arse.

Given the standard of journalism in some quarters, I wouldn't be surprised if some journalist was trying to rock the boat. Maybe Sinead Kissane asked him if he should resign....

To be fair to the Aussie players, I've seen a few clips of them on their own rugby shows, and they do seem up for a laugh and easy enough to deal with.

EDIT - This is a good clip

Let's be honest, the Aussies are all listening to this right now...

Farrelly seems to be a complete eejit in fairness. The Irish version of Stephen Jones but at least Jones is not a bad writer when he's not trying to wind people up. Farrelly is an untalented hack.

Maybe O'Connor is a brat and a smart arse but you can't just say it without backing it up with something. Plus Robbie Deans' default setting is "dour kiwi".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,976 ✭✭✭profitius

The Aussies don't like the media, so what. No point pretending.

As for knowing the Irish players, who cares? If they go into this game too cocky or arrogant then thats a plus for Ireland.

I wish that there were more cocky frankly. It would be great to catch them expecting an easy win but they seem to be talking us up. I read Robbie Deans say (can't find the link now, sorry) in a NZ paper that they're viewing the victory over England as our standard, not our recent form.

"I'm stoked. I can't wait to play against Ireland," said O'Connor.

"To be honest, I'm just focusing on rugby, my next game. Just focusing on Ireland. We've done a lot of good preparation this week and that's where our heads are at.

"It was good to be part of the win against Italy. When I came onto the field, I just wanted to get involved as much as possible and, yeah, it was a good start to the World Cup."

    What a heartless monster.

Congratulations on your "Worst RWC related thread to date" award,
and Hugh Farrelly on a poorly structured attempt at gutter journalism, i thought News of the World had folded:D.

Is there any direct quotes to be seen or some second rate Journo's opinion, i can go to the pub for a more informed opinion tbh.

+1 , show me a 21 yr old guy who isnt arrogant and il show you a 21 year old who isnt up to much in the field of rugby or anything else for that matter , whether its from the mouth of feminists or sports journalist , the word arrogant is thrown around far too cheaply and seems to be a sub for the word evil

You wouldn't be treated this badly on Munsterfans Conas! We all want you back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Conas

I fought a losing battle on Munsterfans a year and a half ago. McCloud was having none of it, and the ban was never lifted. The reason they banned me was because I talked about the male reproductive system, and no matter how many times I said sorry the ban still stands. I also got permanently banned from my home Leinsterfans, because I asked some women out on a date, and when I was rejected I went on a rant. That ban is also permanent. This is my ownly home now. I made a few friends on MF and LF. Ronk, Dan the Man, Sparks, Bosco, Damo, but the moderators hated me with a passion.

I don't know some people are very bitter towards me. I sent a PM to someone talking about the USA match and he said.."You're an odd one Conas". Which was very rude. But Thomond2006 was very nice and sent me a nice PM talking to me about the match.

I picked up a copy of the Indo and Times for my train home. According to the Indo's team line-up, Hayden Smith starting in the second row, and Paul Emerick is lining out at outside centre. Meanwhile Scott Higgenbotham has amassed 30 caps.

i wouldnt take insults too personally on an annonymous internet forum , people are often more blunt in this kind of medium , i rarely ever give a seconds thought to anything ive said or have had said to me once i log off and log back on to the real world

This is supposed to be a thread about O'Connor and not me. But I want everyone to have a good read of this comment I got in a PM, and yes I hope everyone will read it,

"Conas, I will not go into the details of why you are odd but you definitely come across as the social outcast of the rugby forum. You are weird and your opinions are at times very 'out there".
