I'm awaiting the arrival of a new Digital+ box from UPC. They have asked to give back my current box when the courier arrives. Just wondering what do they do with the old boxes and do they take any action if you were to decide to hold on to the old one.

They own the box so you will need to give it back if they are asking you for it.

Theyll charge you 150 quid for non recovery if you don't send it back.

I'm sure they just tidy them up and re-use them, once the card is cancelled the boxes are no use to anyone except UPC

My Pace box for the bedroom was secondhand, it was all packed up in a new box and came with a brand new remote but the unit itself was used though not badly scratched or anything but deffo not brand new. It works a treat though and no doubt it keeps the costs down if they can reuse them so good luck to them.

I fully understand them reusing boxes, and endorse it since customers have no use for them it would be a waste otherwise. However really not pleased to learn they reuse the Pace ones. They're notoriously tempermental, plus they won't support future services like VOD (I'll die of shock if they do)

I have a 19" LCD TV in the bedroom, the Pace box is there over a year now and never gave a minute's problem, I'll be watching the rugby on it tomorrow morning plus I can listen to BBC radio whenever I want. It does what it says on the tin and I'm happy with it.

If and when VOD comes along I'm sure if I ask for it they'll replace the box and give me something new. If they had to give everyone brand new future-proof boxes then we would be paying a lot more for the service than we are at the moment. Recycling used boxes that are still serviceable is a very efficient and cost-effective business model.

The courier will have a note that you are to return your old box, & will probably mention this to you when they ring you to confirm delivery, so the possibility is that he/she won't give you your new one unless you give them the old one. They too are accountable, things have tightened up in recent years.

Either way, if you don't return it you will be charged.

My friend moved out of her house a few month ago and moved abroad. She had arranged a time and date for the old UPC box to be picked up but they never showed to collected it.
A few month later a debt collector began calling and acting very aggresively on the phone threating all sorts and looking for money due to the non return of the box.
She rang UPC and explained that it was thier fault and they just forgot about the whole thing.
I found out after that the boxes are all reflashed and sent out again to new customers.

UPC already operate services (albeit few) that these boxes don't support. And I'm not talking about recording or HD, I mean stuff you don't pay extra for.

    So don't hold your breath.

Uh, no. They own the box, so unless the OP is willing to be billed for not giving it back he probably should.

I was having a problem with my broadband which required replacing the modem. The replacement modem I received was an older version, dating from 2008, with a Webstar logo rather than Scientific Atlanta but looks the same otherwise. I'm aware it's most likely refurbished but works perfectly fine and that's all I need really.

Hi...as we're on topic of Digital + boxes, if you had a HD TV, would you notice a difference in quality of picture if you upgraded to a Digital + box?

edit...btw..is a digital + box the same as a HD box?...sorry, I know nothing about this stuff as you've probably guessed

OP here. Courier arrived on Saturday morning, just as Tommy Bowe was running up the wing with ball in hands. I was fuming at the timing. Anyway I took the new box and unhooked the old one and gave it to courier. Watched the rest of the game upstairs. The old box didn't work, so I called UPC immediately. They replaced it yesterday morning, Tuesday and all is well …
