I'm wondering can an anonomous blogger or Internet forum poster be defamed?

I gather their character/avatar can anyway so in light of this is there any action they can then that to correct a "defamation"?

Now there is plenty on the web about anonymous bloggers defaming but what if the other way round??

I am guessing that the "anonymous person" would have to come forward and say that Avatar is widely known as themselves. There has to be an end point. You could argue that an Avatar is like a brand - but somebody has to come forward to take action.

Would it happen? My observation is that anonymous internet users are all up for privacy on the Internet until somebody has a poke at them. Then they're all for finding IP addresses, looking up social media profiles etc.

I think it would depend on the reputation of this anonymous persona, especially if they had a commercial reputation, e.g. an anonymous account on advert.ie.
