    Hi Paul,

Ive just started PGCE in the university of East London. They offer an equivalency test which you can do if you are successful at interview stage. It'ssnot that difficult just requires some study and practicing past papers. There are other unis which also offer this too so look it up on the GTTR website and apply asap!

before you sent your application for the PGCE , did you have to do a few weeks work in a UK school ? I will have to do the same.

    Hi Paul,
Sorry for the delay, I only saw your question now. I'm probably way too late but no, you don't have to have your experience completed before you apply. If successful, it's fine to get it anytime before the course starts. If you haven't applied yet, I would still apply to University of East london, they take in 330 applicants each year and takes advantage of government funding offerered when taking in students from other countries so seems to favour Irish.(over half of my course are Irish). A lot of people I know did not apply before the closing date of 1st Dec and got offered a place. If you get an interview feel free to ask me advice and sorry for the delay.

    Hi Notwise,
Just a question about your course. I am looking into doing the same as you, but am I correct in thinking that it's approx £9000 for the PGCE in that university? Did you get any grant? I've been on the GTTR website all day looking at different colleges, so just trying to suss out my options, and obviously the financial side of it! Thanks

Hi Blonde Princess. Yeah from what I have been hearing, the fees go up to about that next year, but you get a grant for about 6 (I think)... It's just come up in conversations and everyone is saying that it works out the same as us really in that you will have to pay about 3k yourself. My fees were 3200 which I was able to get student finance for. I didn't get a grant at all but they are bringing in a grant nxt year to make up for the hike in fees. They will send you forms if you get accepted and just keep in mind to make yourself out to be as independent as possible (i.e. not getting help from parents or living with a partner) that'll make you more eligible. Hope that helps, good luck and let me know if I can help!

Hi Notwise, just one more question! Is this where you applied for that grant?

    hi everyone

so i want to do the primary pgce in london, but i only have junior cert science, not leaving cert, which is required.

there seems to be around 10 course providers in london.

as this thread already mentions, applicants to UEL seemed to be ok without science, and a friend told me that the same was true in Brunel.

    but Brunels website specifically states:

    • English, Maths and Science grades A* to C or equivalent at GCSE level.
    • In house GCSE equivalency tests will not be offered. Applicants must meet the GCSE requirements at the point of application.

i havent rang up the various providers yet, but i was just wondering has any poster on here experience of applying to

    brunel,

    st marys,

    UEL,

    greenwich,

    institute of education,

    kingston,

    londen met,

    london south bank,

    goldsmiths or

    roehampton

    without LC science?

any feedback would be much appreciated.

    Hi there,
I thought I had heard that Brunel offer the equivalency test but if that is stated on their website then they must have stopped running it. UEL is the only London uni I know of that offers the equivalency test, for sept 2012 I would think it is full but if you apply by Dec '12 through GTTR and get past interview stage, you should be able to sit the test in May '13.

thanks notwise. after finding some responses to an old email from last year i sent to various english uni's im a little bit freaked about this science requirement as they all (newcastle, manchester, warwick, brighton) told me that my JC science wont cut it. along with UEL, do you know of any other english uni that offer equivalency tests? i really dont wanna go to scotland :(

Oh no, they must have stopped doing the equivalency tests last year then?? I didn't hear anything about that. I think on the GTTR site I was somehow able to do a search of uni's that I could apply for without science. I can't remember which ones came up but I think there were a few in London. Are you hoping to do it in Sept '12 or '13?? You could always do ordinary level biology, physics or chemistry at LC level and sit next June? I still don't know if thats possible if they have changed it around though...Sorry I can't be more definite..

Sorry! I have read ur reply wrong... I thought you said along with UEL they don't do equivalency tests!! Do you not want to go to London??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 168 ✭✭cudsy1

haha ya i want to go to london, but to maximise my chances with the application (you can only apply to two unis throught the gttr right?) it would be an advantage to know which unis offer equivalancy tests.. woah, i see what you mean about the course search without science, almost twenty providers came up, including brunel, UEL, south bank and the institute of education in london, thanks for the tip! i suppose the next step is to try and contact these unis directly and ask about the science equivalancy test... im thinkin of sep '13, so yeah, could do the LC next year...didnt think about ordinary level, i thought higher was needed...must look into it again....

Ah I know what you mean!! Well I know the UEL one takes place in May. I'm sure the others are about the same. UEL has a very large Irish intake and they dont seem to favour people who have Science grades which is great. There were 320 on our course and I reckon more than half of those were Irish.. A friend went to Southbank and she said it was very like X factor in that there were different stages in the day and they halved the amount of people going through to each stage so only 50% of interviewees got through each day.. Southbank was also in the news earlier this year for being the lowest ranked uni in the whole of the UK so might not be recognised as a good provider. don't kno anything about Brunel! Good luck with it!!

    Hi cudsy1,

Im in the same boat as you without lc science :( Is there any colleges outside london where you can apply to with science as i cant seem to find any??

    thanks for your help

Is there one in Liverpool called Edgehill Uni?? I thought I'd considered that last year for some reason...Alternatively Scotland uni's don't have a science requirement but I do know the competition is pretty fierce for it.

UEL is fine! I found it easy enough to get through the interviews etc and there were lots of irish on the course. It's not in the nicest area of London but it's cheap and it has really been improved this year with teh Olympics being hosted on its doorstep.
London is great, you will find it really easy to get work once you have your qualification, I got work from the Monday after I finished the course and got paid for the full summer. Definitely lots of opportunities here!

salmon 1: outside of london im not sure, as im only really looking at london in london, only brunel and uel seem to offer equivalency tests
