Basic matchplay question

This shouldn't take long to get an answer.

I'm playing off 16, my opponent off 20. Straight up matchplay.

Does he get an allowance on indexes 1-4, or indexes 1, 2, 17 and 18.?

I don't claim to be a rules expert, but I think the rule is:

"In a handicap match, the lower net score wins the hole. "

In relation to your query, I would interpret that as meaning you give your opponent a shot on indexes 1-4.

    Is this a wind up?

No is the answer to your question. You get 4 shots yes. But the holes you take them on depends on the course you are playing. The card of the course should have the info you need. For example if the hardest holes are 8, 9, 17 & 18, you wont get two of your shots on the last two holes. The order is assigned taking into account how many shots you have, and what indexes the holes are.

Boardsmember you've raised the interesting question of whether it's better to know the rules or better to be able to read.

Thanks for the simple replies chaps. That's the way I always saw it - but the stableford variation messed with my head last week when playing (informally) with a mate.

    I have re-read the post.

First thing, I didnt intend the tone of my post to be aggressive, I intended it to be lighthearted.

As my post no doubt suggests, I am confused. Maybe someone can help me understand where I am going wrong. I thought the question was where does he get his shots. In my club, indexes one to 4 are 3, 8, 17, 18. If I am getting two shots I get them on 8 & 15; if I am getting 3 shots I get them on 6, 10, 15; if I am getting 4 shots I get them on holes 3, 6, 10 & 15; i.e. spreading the shots over the 18 holes, depending on how many shots you get.

Is this not how all clubs do it? I have never played matchplay in other clubs, other than scratch matchplay stuff. Or maybe this is how other clubs do it, and I continue to miss the point of the post.

    Isn't it indices 1,2, 17 & 18?

He gets 2 shots at indices 1 & 2, you only get one, so he has a shot on you on each. And you have no shot on 17 & 18 whereas he has one. so again one up on you - 1,2,17 & 18.

    No!
Singles matchplay is Full Difference so effectively the 16 handicapper plays off scratch and the 20 handicapper plays off 4 (the difference between the handicaps). These 4 shots are taken at the 4 lowest indexed ('hardest') holes which makes perfect theoretical sense.

By the way, a course can have a separate "matchplay" index that is only used for matchplay and is different from the regular strokeplay/stableford index but I don't remember ever having noticed one in use?

This is what I was trying to get at. Thanks for putting it in easy to read English.

So because your club has index 1 and 2 maybe as 17th and 18th they have changed it for matchplay because those holes might never be reached thus negating the benefit of handicap allowance.

Yes, that's what I tried to explain in my first post.

As has been pointed out to me, I struggle with reading & (apparently) writing...

Sorry, but you're wrong. As PhilipMarlowe pointed out, the club is entitled to have a separate matchplay index, in which case indexes 1-4 would not be the correct holes to take your 4 shots

Its still index 1-4 if you have four shots, its just a different index than you would be playing in medal.
