    Hi,

    I am 21year old male..

Thinking of moving to the UK and eventually joining the police force over there.Im aware that one must be in the uk for a period of 3 years before applying, the reason for this is down to vetting purposes.

The Garda recruitment in Ireland seems to be going nowhere!

    any advice folks?

I ve a degree in Finance and accounting so i could use this to get some work.

    any opinons ?

    Stevie:)

The UK forces are even more fúcked than we are. Compulsory redundancies and force mergers. It'll be a long time before they recruit over there.

Recruitment situation looks very bleak in the UK right now - the 8 Scottish forces will be merged next year for example.
When you consider The Met is a huge force with a relatively high turnover and it has stopped recruiting that gives an idea of how poor the outlook is.
There was some talk that after the recent riots that the Government would reconsider the cuts to Police budgets - that has not materialised and the Home Secretary as recently as last week reiterated that cuts would have to be made.

Worth bearing in mind that there is a lot of speculation that when recruitment resumes the new entrants will be on pay and benefit packages inferior to what is currently the norm.

Best advice for someone thinking of joining the UK Police is to try and get some service as a ' Special ' as some forces are thought likely to make that a requirement - still need 3 years residency for that though.

Do they have 'Specials' in the PSNI?and if so would the three year residency rule still apply?

    Cheers!

The PSNI does not have Specials as I think they regarded it as unacceptable to place people in danger when they are unpaid. They do have part time paid police, but they javen't recruited in years as they determine whether they are economically viable.

If they ever did recruit ' Specials ' I can guarantee you that they will never be known by that name for historical reasons.

As Goonerdee has said there is the Part-Time Reserve which is armed and paid ( Full Time Reserve has been abolished ).

P.S.N.I. operate the 3 year rule but they permit residency in the Republic of Ireland to count toward this , to my knowledge no other UK force grants this exemption.

    OP,

Head for the City of London Police Service. They look for candidates with your qualifications for fraud etc because of the square mile. Or try the Met.

Usual rules will apply though re residency etc. But put in you application now and recruitment may be up and running after four years.

Damn, didn't think things were as bad with the UK forces. There goes my career safety net so.
