Internet access for non-Trinity students - help appreciated

Hi, would be grateful for any help with this query.

I'm a non-Trinity based research student. I'm living very near to TCD and would be very handy to work from there on a couple of days a week, either in the library or in the Postgrad reading room.

My college is based across town and is a pain to try and get to every day. Unfortunately not being a student at Trinity prevents me from using the university wireless network and I do need access to the internet for my work.

Is the there any way of accessing the network that I don't know about or even, is it possible to pay for internet access in the college. Or is there an open network in the library?

I'm a former student of Trinity but I don't think this makes any difference in terms of accessing the internet. As I said, any advice is most welcome. Cheers!

if your institution is a member of eduroam

You should be able to get on via eduroam (as above), and if you're a past student you can get a graduate readers card from the library to access the library and I think you can even request stacks books for consultation in the library. You won't be able to get into the PG room though.

As another has pointed out, if you're studying in another institution that is allied with Eduroam then you can access the internet in Trinity. However - and I can't stress this enough - it's up to you to sort this out with your own college computer service. Please do not bother asking TCD staff about this - it's something that your current institution has to arrange for you.

If your college is not part of Eduroam then the Library will provide limited access to the databases and e-journals to which we hold a subscription. Internet browsing, word-processing, access to social networking sites and emails are prohibited. Four terminals are set aside for this purpose, and can be accessed on a first-come, first-served basis, and you will need a member of Library staff to log you in.

To access the Library, you need a Graduate Reader's Ticket. More details are available here - www.tcd.ie/Library/using-library/admissions.php#TrinityCollegeDublinGraduates . Alternatively you can get the Library in your own institution to supply you with an ALCID card, which entitles postgraduate students access to any third-level institution in the country.

After that, you're on your own. Not to sound harsh, but another institution is now benefitting from your fees, and so Trinity is under no obligation to facilitate you any further.

Reminded me of this, I was in the Hamilton computer rooms and security came in to check everybody's student I.D.

They've been doing that all summer. Fella woke me from my super productive slumbers a few times.

Avoid the bureaucracy and buy a 3G dongle.

Get one cheap on O2 have a look at o2.ie/heanet

9.99 per month for 10GB and then you're free to access what you want.

Thanks all for the replies. I'm thinking the plug-in dongle is the best bet. Eduroam would have been handy but my institution is St. Patrick's College Drumcondra and according to the eduroam site 'location map', none of the smaller DCU colleges are listed. Saying that, DCU is listed so maybe all DCU institutions are covered by the university itself. Anyway, cheers for all the advice.
