managing a gambling problem

    hi everyone

my OH is a gambler... not a huge or bad one (compared to others), but enough of a gambler that on his day off he will sit all day with the horseracing on the TV & on the computer (this is what he does when he has no money)...or he goes to the bookies (if/when he has money)...

His gambling problem is as contained as I can make it - he has no access to our joint bank accounts; his own bank account & atm card have no overdraft facility. Basically the only time he gets money is when I give it to him (which I hate having to do, as its like a parent givign a child pocket money - but that's a whole other topic).

He does go to Gamblers Anonymous, but like a lot of people with addictions, he falls in & out of recovery - he will never get better until he is properly ready to, I have accepted this. I can only do my best to limit the damage/effects at the moment.

    My problem/question now is:

He wants to stop going to the bookies and remove himself from that environment (ie break the habit), and wants an online betting account that he can do from home instead.

I refuse point blank to give him any bank account details / card details as I know his gambling history will show up on our banking history and will go against us for loans, mortgages etc etc

Is there any way of banks /lending institutions finding out a gambling habit if you use a pre-paid mastercard or cashcard?!

I know you have to supply passport or national identity number to get 1 of these cards, but Im thinking this may be the only way to help him manage his problem without it having any repercussions on our financial future (with banks etc).

My question here is really about the cashcard, not about his gambling - I know the insides & outsides of gambling addiction by now, so I am not seeking advice/comments on that aspect of my thread - i just mentioned it for background information.

    thanks everyone

OP - as this forum is for personal issues we cannot really advise on financial or banking questions. If you would like to get some advice on the gambling aspect of this query we will be happy to reopen this thread.

For the cashcard component you may be better going to one of the following forums
    >Rec > Gambling & Gambling FAQs
    > Biz > Personal > Banking....

    All the best
