    Hi

I was just wondering if anyone on here does a regular commute from Roscrea to Athlone? I may be changing jobs in the near future and would be looking at commuting from Donaghmore ( 15 mins from Roscrea ) to Athlone. Just want to people's experiences of driving it etc?

Not sure if train is a solution: Ballybrophy/Portlaoise -> Portarlington, Portarlington to Athlone. There is not much choice of trains to get there early in the morning.

    Thanks in advance!

Forget about using the train - the times would be useless for your journey and would take far too long going via Portarlington.

Bus services are non-existent linking the two towns be they public or private.

I'm afraid driving is the only realistic option.

Yeah, train times look fairly bad. There's only one really that would get me there for 8:58am. Pity there is not one that is earlier. Did not bother with buses, reckoned they would be just as bad, if non-existent.

Driving looks the best option. I've driven it a few times, I can usually do in about 1hr 10 mins within the law :) The only thing that is playing in the back of my mind is driving it in winter.

    Hi

I drove Donaghmore -> Roscrea -> Birr -> Athlone ( N62 ) there the other day. I left at about 8:00am and was at the roundabout ( McDonalds ) in about 70 minutes, with some roadworks on the way. Normal driving conditions, never broke speed limit once.

    Q. Does anyone drive this route ( or part of, say Roscrea/Birr to Athlone ) regurlarly? How is it in winter in particular

    Thanks - laoisfan

    one word - slippy!

Birr to Roscrea was one big ice rink in November last, if u could drive in the ruts of previous cars it was ok. Rest of route wasn't great either, with the Knockanea (?) hill, just before joining the old N6 outside Athlone was "fun", esp at end of Dec.

Winter tyres, and a front wheel, or 4x4 drive, will be ok for most days, even if winter is as bad as last year, just will take longer.
