Hi everyone, looking for some help or advice, a friend of mine bought a car a few months back. The car in question has a log book and service history book with it, she has been hearin a strange noise lately and had a mechanic look at her car. He said he things the timing belt needs changing and asked her to check when it had last been changed, which she checked in the service book! as she bought the car from soemone she didnt know she said she would ring the garage it had been serviced at and on doing so discovered that the stamps were fake and that the car had never been there!!! they checked they system and uncovered that the milage on the car is 140,000 and not the 80,000 that it says on the dash!!! is it common for people to adjust the miles?? feel bad for my friend and she was obviously fooled!! she now feels like selling it and I feel bad for her!!

Yes, it is common for people to clock cars.
How did garage know the mileage if they had never seen the car?

It des happen - this is why i'm always advising people to verify the service history by calling the garages that stamped the book before putting down any money. Did she buy the car privately, or from a garage?

she bought it privately!!!oh she has learned a very valuable lesson, the car dealership was able to check the cars number plate on the system and was able to tell her how many miles were on it in the last garage it had been seen in!!! pity she didnt check the car properly before she bought it but sure hindsight is a great thing!!!

Ah well, what's done is done. Is the car generally ok, apart from the mileage?
