Hi! I own a small pub and i am heating it with an open fire and oil heating. In the last year i was thinking of pulling out the open fire and putting in a stove. But in the long run i didnt. the reason so was becuase the fire place was only built 4 years ago and i wouldnt really have enough space to put on in. Also the fire looks good. But in last week i got thinking to put in an old style pot belly stove. I was thinking of putting the stove pipe out threw the wall and using an external chimney. Im thinking of having the fire and stove in the bar. What i want to know is?

    1. If i use an external chimney does it have to go above ridge of house in order to get suffiecnt draw? Where i want to put the stove is at the back of the bar away from the exsisting chimney.

    cheers!

Hi if the place where the stove and chimney is going to be fitted is an extension projecting out from the 2 storey building then no the flue does not have to be above the main building ridge, but has to be a certain distances out from the main building. I can't remember what that is:rolleyes:

If the stove is going to be in a 2 storey building then yes it needs to go above eaves or ridge. Could you post some pics of new flue location?

Personally if you have to build a chimney it could cost quite a bit:mad: Your best bet would be to use the existing fireplace.

These cast iron pot belly stoves are very poor quality. Generally made in china. I doubt burning coal they would last very long. I had one in a shed and it was painted black from the factory and the painted finish soon went and rust started very quickly. It was not fire brick lined inside and would glow bright red with using coal. It had no proper door seals and leaked in air like a sieve, so no control of the burn.

You would be better off buying a well known branded stove or a used branded make.
