I have had an issue with the drivers side door speaker for a good while, where it would just cut out but come on again when I turned up the volume. Now its goosed altogether. Very annoying.

Can anyone tell me if there is a solution? The car is a 2005 A4.

    Many thanks.

It's either a pinched/damaged wire, the speaker has buckled its voice coil or there is a problem with the amplifier in the stereo. It's hard to say without further investigation unless there is a known fault with the A4.

I'd start by swapping the left/right speaker connections at the back of the head unit.

Forgive the dumb question but how do I go about this?

Funnily enough I have the same problem in my '03 A4. The speaker in the rear right door doesn't work when the radio is at a low volume. When I turn it up it starts working, then I can turn it down and the speaker will continue to work for a while.

It's not a dumb question by any stretch of the imagination.

You've probably got either an Audi Concert or Symphony stereo.

If you can remove the stereo then you'll need to identify the relevant speaker wires and swap accordingly. Swapping is not an easy task and you'll need to know and understand how to remove the pins from the ISO connector block.

Pins can be removed by inserting a small point like a paper clip and pressing on the retaining tab. You'll see what I mean once you have the ISO (connector block) in your hand.
