Are there any types of acoustic bass that can be played and heard better, without amplification, than others? I Have a small amount of cash to spend and I am thinking of buying an acoustic bass as opposed a full electric.

Ernie Ball Earthwood bass. However, they're fckin' rare and expensive. Other than that an upright bass or acoustic bass with an amp. :p Generally acoustic guitar-like bass guitars are a lost cause.

If your trying to decide between an electric and an acoustic the electric is a more useful instrument generally. It suits more styles and easier to get a sound from if you're recording.

Depends what you mean by "heard"....

All acoustic basses can be heard on their own.... most of the jumbo sized basses can hold their own against one acoustic guitar but you need to go to something like the Earthwood mentioned above or a Tacoma Thunderchief or the like to have a chance of being heard with more than an acoustic guitar....and some of these guys are BIG ! OK, not quite guitarron big, but still big.

That said, an acoustic makes for a nice solo practice instrument unplugged and can deliver an impressive tone when amplified.

I have a thinline Washburn AB10 that is ergonomically nice and gives perfect volume unplugged for practicing. Plugged into my Roland 100w bass cube it can hold it's own against other instruments nicely and with Thomastik Acousticore strings it can deliver an good approximation to a double bass sound too if needs be.

All depends on what you're looking for !
