    Hi all,
My youngest lad has just gone to NUI Galway.
He's just joined the Rugby Club and needs some kit having never played the game before. GAA was his sport.
Any advice on the best place to purchase boots, etc.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

http://www.rugbystore.co.uk/ has a limited selection (of boots but good for other rugby gear) but cheapest shipping.

http://www.lovell-rugby.co.uk/ have a very good selection at reasonable prices.

http://www.prodirectrugby.com/ have a good selection too with packages sent via courier (DPD i think).

I've used them all without complaint.

If he's likely to be in the forwards - especially one of the lifting positions in the lineout - make sure to get a pair of boots that are high on the ankles!

If he is a back just wear normal football boots. Same if he is a forward except just put in steel studs.

No need to go to the expense of having boots just for rugby.

I am in front row. I have a pair of football style half mouldy with steel tipped studs for hard ground an have a pair of Canterbury boots with long steel studs for the mucky days. Will be getting a shorter set of stell studs for in betweener conditions.

    Thank you all.
I would guess the lad will be a forward. He's just turned 18 and 6feet 4inch.
Many thanks for the websites of the online stores.
Looks like more money going out of daddys pocket.

If you go with soccer boots be advised they don't last. It's worth buying specialist rugby boots just for durability. No pair of soccer boots has ever lasted me a season.

No need for rugby specific boots straight off. Whatever he used for gaa would be fine. I play in the forwards and have used rugby and soccer boots, no big difference. Also, I have found rugby boots to be no more durable than soccer ones

This site is also good for deals on boots and rugby gear in general:

I have had the Adidas flanker boots for over 2 years now (3rd season) and they are still going strong.

I also get any thermal wear here too. The Gilbert stuff is cheap and keeps me really warm: http://www.newitts.com/shop/1/12/Compression_Skins.htm

If he's mostly backrow, then studded football boots will be fine. If he's playing second row (more likely), then i'd recommend a proper set of forward's boots - they will have an extra 2-3 studs near the front (the part in contact with the ground while scrummaging). The extra studs reduce mobility a little, but the extra grip is helpful on a slippery day.
