Which companies, apart from axa, if any, will insure a 1980s, old irish reg car as a daily driver? With nct and tax in date etc obviously.

I've been offered an immaculate little starlet (yes it's "old" rather than falling into the vintage/classic band, but i like "just old" cars as well as classics) in exchange for something.

Decided this would probably be best here as more people would have gone about insuring older cars in here. It was never a problem on the trade policy, and as i said, axa have said they'd do it and have covered 80s cars in the past for me, but i've become really unhappy with the service, policies and prices i've been getting from axa lately.

    Try first Ireland, Carosl nash.

Basically you are going to have to go through the hoop for finding somebody...

I just give you a tip, call First Ireland as they do insure old car insure as a private car. I think someone is insuring a car from 1971 as a private car with them.

After you can also get a classic insurance if you have the use of a private car and are a name driver on it.

That is your tip.;) can't do better than that I am afraid

Mine is insured through Aviva. €250 per year. There may be a mileage restriction but I only do about 2,000 miles per annum. Promoter broken do I have no idea.

That sound like a lovely price but the problem is i don't actually want classic insurance with limited mileage, i want to have normal insurance to run it as an everyday car. Can get a classic policy alright and axa will also cover an 80s car as a daily driver but i'm not at all happy with their prices. Ended up stupidly busy today so i didn't even get to ring around but i must.

Try First Ireland, as suggested. They're brokers so they'll have a bank of insurers to choose from. I've used them for years.

That's solid advice and good to hear from someone who's used a particular source, I had intended to get to it today but as I said I got stupidly busy

Did you need another car also for that? I have technically two other cars but neither of them are tested or taxed.

As in was that a classic policy just with a high mileage limit?

Ok Conrad, I am going to try to help out here.

If you get a classic car policy you need to have the use of a private car as well.
Like for example the car of you partner/spouse which you would be named drive on her car.
If you don't have any of that, you can forget of the classic car policy as they won't insure you.

Only first Ireland as far as I know are doing a full private car insurance for vehicle older than 20 years.

I am in a similar situation and looking for a car insurance for my old car which I will have soon, hopefully I will manage to get a classic car insurance for it.

The best for you is to ring first Ireland, however I have to say that it depend a bit whom you are talking to.
Sometime people said it is better to go directly in the office, as you get better answer.

Thanks, but I know generally that a classic car policy needs another, non classic car, but I just want a normal policy if I can get it, I won't have a classic as a daily driver just an old car that happens to be in great condition that reminds me of a lot of fun i used to have with those when I was first driving, it also would suit for the moment to have something with very cheap tax and low fuel consumption on short journeys and I already know that they have that. I will be calling several places tomorrow morning anyway.
Don't have anything at present that falls into the classic tax band anyway or that i'd want to be babying and keeping stored away for occasional trips, but i'll get back to that eventually i hope.

This is not true. I have been insured on a classic policy for my daily driver. I had no other car. Insurance was through First Ireland. I can't remember the insurance company. There was absolutely no problem getting it. They are really nice and easy to deal with. I just moved to Aviva because I got a better deal when I shopped around.

To be honest, I am glad to here it is not true. However I heard that from different insurance company.

I would like to do the same think as Conrad, and to be honest the first time I checked with First Ireland it was no problem, then I rechecked that few month ago and had somebody else and it was not possible anymore.
Maybe the next time it will be, as I said depend whom you are talking to...

Just type your details here and get a quote from aviva.

    https://services.aviva.ie/direct/product/car.htm

Got a quote for an 82 starlet for €360.... comprehensive insurance (for what it's worth).
