I'm buying a 1979 Honda 50 for my missus to run about on, its in great condition and will cost me €500.

    My questions are as follows

Can she drive this on a B car license with out having to do a test or need a different license , and if not what's the correct license required?

How much road tax per year?

How much insurance per year for a 28 year old woman?

With its age , if something does go wrong are they easy to maintian and are parts easy to obtain?

    thank you .

it should say on her license if she can drive it or not. it will be an A1 license needed i think. i dont know about insurance but tax will cost next to nothing. i would say there are parts everywhere for it.
edit:try quinns online quote generator to get an idea of insurance.

    Theory test
    IBT
    Test
    The works.

M is <49cc and <45km/h, doesn't mater if it has gears

Even if she will only be riding the scooter she would be better off going for the full A. I doubt it would cost much more then A1, I think she'd still need to hire a bike for the test, and so much better to have in the long term.

    Thanks for the info.

Is the learners permit similar to the provisional licence? and if she holds the permit is she eligible to get insured and drive the bike on public highways?

I wasn't aware that a test was required for such a low cc vehicle , when I lived in Germany/Holland/Belgium I could go into the post office and buy a moped/scooter licence for €25 , no test required for under 50cc.
I might pass and get her a car , as I don't think the expense of doing the test for the full licence would warrant spending the cash for a vehicle that would only be used minimally.

Provisional licences where gotten rid of a few years back to make it clear that when you are learning you don't have a licence, hence learners permit. For all motorcycles once you've completed IBT, gotten your permit and sorted out Motor tax and insurance you can drive on your own.

A Moped is the same in all the EU, we just never had the ride at 14 with nothing/easily obtained licence. They don't trust us.

The test for a bike licence may be less then the insurance/motor tax for a car and will she use a car any more then the bike?

You'd need to see how much insurance will be, only some companies will give you a discount on a new car policy with your current NCB.

If the Honda 50 is in very good condition and you can get it for €500 I would still go ahead and buy it, even if you never ride it they are only appreciating in value every year. Obviously get someone with more knowledge to check it out first.

I would say that a Honda dealer can still get most parts + there are specialists who can still get every part!

I think the oul 50 is worth getting for that price either way. There are fairly ratty looking ones going for more than that on donedeal and the likes. Them 50s run forever
