Part-time training course recommendations

    Hi

I'm looking to get into Further Education training e.g. part-time in VECs, FAS, private colleges etc.

I have a primary degree and a bachelors so I will register with the Teaching Council. I also have industry experience in training management.

However, I don't have a training qualification and I think that could be valuable in applying for a training position. I'm looking to do a part-time course to give me this qualification and some more hands-on practise.

I think the 4 day Train the Trainer courses are too basic and short, I would like something with a better "qualification". I'm considering the JEB / EDI course as this would also allow me to teach basic IT.

Any other recommendations or suggestions? Has anyone done any of the distance learning courses in NUI Galway?

    Many thanks
    NG

I did the Certificate in Training and Continuing Education - run by Cavanagh Consulting and accredited by NUI Maynooth. It is only 4 class room days but is in effect a distance learning course - very good course books . It is a level 7 Minor award so higher than a lot of the other courses on the market. You fill in a portfolio , have to do a 10 minute presentation to an assessor from NUI and also a 2,500 word assignment. I got a lot out of it - met great people and really built my confidence. I used it to progress the development of some study skills modules which I am running this autumn.

    Info on it here http://www.cavanaghconsulting.ie/index.html

Given that you have a lot of experience any way I think it might tick most of the boxes for you!

    Hope this helps!

Be aware that as and from 2013 for the public sector (VECs etc) you will be required to have a training qualification similar to the HDip.

Thanks very much for your replies.

Bagel - I had actually come across that one since my post. Do you think it gave you enough practical experience?

Further Ed. - I didn't know that, I appreciate the tip. Obviously, that's something I need to consider. Is there somewhere where I can read up about this - the Teaching Council website maybe?

    Thanks again
    N.

Sorry for late reply. No the course didn't give practical experience at all. You really need to be able to have access to students to carry out the portfolio exercises. I was able to set up some trial classes - found course v.useful re lesson planning etc - have totally re structured what I was going to do as a result of the course. So probably if you don't have access to people to practice on yourself it mightn't be the course for you.
