mouth guard - how long should they last?

I got a mouth guard from my dentist around 4 or 5 months ago, its a hard acrylic one. After some adjustments it was comfortable to wear, but now I have noticed theres a hole already on one side of it. How long would they usually last for? It was around 250e so quite expensive. When I was getting it done, the dentist said he would like to shave off the cusps of my back teeth to make the guard fit better - I didn't like the idea of shaving off tooth structure as I wasn't expecting it, so didn't go ahead with that as the dentist was quite ratty that I was nervous and questioning why the cusps would need to be shaved off slightly. Any advice would be welcome, is it normal enough to have the cusps shaven down and will it weaken my teeth?

Sound like a thin area on the splint has worn through, this is often not a problem but you should go back to the dentist and check. A hard nightguard made properly has a lifespan of 3-5 years in a moderate grinder. Much better per year cost soft ones.

My orthodontist wanted to shave off my back molars to improve my occlusion but I didn't let him do that. It looked like an easy and cheap fix which is not really necessary, as I'm almost certain there are workarounds to achieve the same without ruining tooth material.

As part of my orthodontic treatment I am wearing a splint (on my lower teeth). I first noticed holes on the side in which food got stuck so the orthodontist filled those holes. Then after just 3 months the splint cracked in two places. I think it was my fault though because I put it into too hot water for cleaning after which the splint felt too stiff. I have had a new one made at no additional cost.

I am also a grinder (probably because of my malocclusion), and was actually wondering whether that splint (which is just there to help with my bite - it doesn't actually do anything else) also protects against my grinding, or is that plastic material too hard.
