For any one with an A2DP car stereo and the iphone.

with an A2DP compatible car stereo, will everything i play on the iphone be played through the car speakers?
as in if im watching a movie or streaming video from someplace, will the audio play just the same as if im listening to music from my ipod folder on the phone?

also,im sure theres plenty of A2DP car stereos available, but would anyone here recommend a particular model or make?

From my exp with a Sony car stereo it directs any sound the phone makes thru the speakers when using Bluetooth.
I also have the option to connect via USB cable which is a bit of a pain because the stereo takes over the file playing duties, you are forced to select music thru the head unit rather then the iPod app. If you have a lot of artists for example it's very cumbersome.
Also on BT it allows u to skip n pause using the head unit. Don't have a model number for mine but it's the made for iPhone one that u get from halfords

    Thats great,thanks!

    Overall youre happy with A2DP?
I really want a wire free setup in the car as much as possible.

Find it so handy, near perfect sound quality.

Yes it plays anything, iPod, streaming radio apps, audio from video files, etc. iOS 4 brought controls so you can skip tracks, without touching the phone.

I have a Sony mex bt 2500 I bought about 3 years ago. There is probably a more advanced model now for similar money, I got mine for €120 in halfords.

Once paired and as long as Bluetooth is on, you hop in and it pairs up automatically, all you need to do is press play/choose an audio app on the phone. It pauses music if there's a call and continues it when the call ends. Caller audio is played through speakers and you just chat away. Also when you turn of the ignition the audio pauses so no need to press stop or anything.

The one issue I have is when the iPod is playing, there's an AirPlay icon, you hit that and you can choose output - iPhone/Xplod (Xplod being the stereo). So obviously Xplod is what I want and that's what it defaults to. However, if the phone rings I press answer and you get the usual iPhone screen, 6 buttons and an end call button. Where 'speaker' usually is, there's a source option, where you choose between phone and stereo. For some reason this defaults to phone. So the phone is in a cradle, and I have to answer, press source and choose stereo and then I can talk. Little odd and I'm not sure of it's the stereo or iOS, or something I'm doing wrong.

Apart from that it's a great setup and very handy. Nice throwing the phone to a back seat passenger and they can choose music without a mess of wires.

Think I have the same system. For me if you press the volume dial in, it answers and routes the call thru the stereo. If you answer by using the slider on the phone it will route thru the phone and give u the option to pass it back thru Bluetooth. That would be my best guess as to why that's happening

I have the Sony Mex BT 2500 as well. Highly recommended as a solid performing bluetooth head unit.

This would explain why incoming calls keep getting routed via the phone when they never used to... I obviously stopped answering thru the stereo which I used to do!

    You magnificent bastard.

I used to answer through the stereo with my old phone but assumed you couldn't with iOS 3 as the skip controls didn't work. Then when iOS 4 came out I forgot you could use the volume knob to answer.

Lads, if you are jailbroken you can install an app which allows you to control the sounds through the IPOD app when connected with USB.

Would really help if I gave you the name of the app I guess :)

Download NoAccessorySplash and then there's no hassle using the USB connection.
Made my life a whole lot less complicated.

I seem to have pimped this quite a lot here, but I got an XCarLink kit for my iPhone, with the optional bluetooth module.

I can listen to music through the standard iPhone data connection (so I can control the tracks through the steering wheel controls), through Bluetooth or through a normal headset jack as well. It also works as a handsfree kit for phone calls. It's a really nice bit of kit, and compatible with a load of different headunits. This is handy if you don't want to replace an integrated style stereo in the car.

Good job Eoin - does the connector charge the iphone too?
Have a Dension kit myself (not sure if they are still made) - phone slots into a cradle. Only problem would be if iPhone 5's shape and size changed drastically.

The Parrot Mki9200 car kit is also worth a mention. Supports both A2DP and direct connection, also charges the iphone.

Yep, charges it as well. The sound quality is far better through the USB connection than through bluetooth, so if you've a decent sound system you will notice the difference.
