im thinking of picking up a 2nd hand 3gs from a guy i work with for a pretty reasonable price but it needs (well, could do with) a few repairs.
ive never opened an iphone or anything before so i have a few questions.

from inspection of the phone the back cover is scratched and has a crack in it,the front screen is fairly scratched and he says the battery isnt great.

    my questions are:

with the 3gs,can you just replace the glass as opposed to along with the digitizer aswell? As far as i can see the actual display on the phone is fine bar the scratches.
am i better off to just replace what needs to be replaced or should i just change the digitizer aswell while i have the phone open?

also, changing the back casing doesnt look too complicated, same with the battery but is there a sequence in which they should be done?
we'll say i go ahead and change the screen, back casing and battery, what order should they be done in?

Is ebay the best place to buy spare parts?dont fancy putting a cheap crap battery (or anything else) into it.

    thanks!:D

The front glass is the digitizer(you can't separate them, sellers selling the glass only are scammers)
You don't need to replace the LCD, just the Digitizer.
well you've to take everything out of the case to replace so first strip everything from the old casing.
be very careful, use a hairdryer to remove the digitizer from the midframe, wifi aerial and camera lens from the rear case.
Good quality Superglue comes in handy for sticking the existing bezel to the new case

Buy a good quality rear housing and Digitizer, I've seen some shocking rears sold as Originals. To be honest I don't think the original 3GS rears are very easy to come by so you will be buying a copy.

Check the battery your getting is definitely for a 3GS I've had 2 customers in the last week sent 3G batteries from ebay sellers and been told they were for a 3GS, google the APN numbers before bidding

Go ahead and replace the glass thats fairly easy and the digitizer is in the glass so thats the digitizer done aswell.

As for the back casing, you have r=to dismantle every single component on the phone literally. Was the longest fet hours of my life, never again will I do it. Google the process first if you can.

    Order would be:

    Back casing
    Battery
    Screen
