Faulty thermostat?

I just noticed that the thermostat in the house may be faulty.
When I turn the dial there is a click around the 30 degrees mark. Obviously this is useless to me as I would like the click to be around the 18-20 degrees.

Anybody have any solution for this? Before I get a new one.

It sounds like your stat is working, it is just out of calibration. You could rewrite the numbers in the correct place.

Or move the dial marker, assuming the room is not actually at 30 degrees:eek:

If it is 10 degrees out for example, the lowest 10 degrees of the scale will be out of range now.

If I move the dial marker to 20, the central heating does not come on. When I move the dial to the right, when i hear the click, then the heating comes on.

How do I rewrite the numbers in the correct place? I will probably have to open up the thermostat, any things to watch out for?
    Thanks

You missed what i meant. My suggestion was similar to 2011`s, except remarking the dial instead of re-writing the numbers.

You go into room, measure actual temperature beside the stat. So as example, actual room air temp at the stat is 20 degrees measured with a thermometer, now turn the stat up until it clicks on. You now remark the actual dial at the 20 degree position. Or remove the dial and fit back on the spindle pointing at 20 degrees. Or just take into account the reading inaccuracy and use this as a basis to set the temperature

Over all, a new stat is best though.

thermostat never seem that accurate IMO.

Its a simple matter of turning the stat up until the heating comes on, and see how it works on that stat. If the stat was above a radiator, it would behave as in the OP here. If its reading 30 degrees in the unheated house with heating off, then its a bit out alright.

At the end of the day, there is one stat for all downstairs, or upstairs, which only gives a general control of the temperature in the controlled zone, not control of individual rooms.

i remember a job i did a while back where there house holder was giving out about the stat not working properley at night, always said she had to turn it up all the way to get it to work,

called out to the house only to see that she had a 100w standing corner light sitting right beside the stat,

heat from the lamp was tricking the stat into giving the wrong temp

i didnt tell her this, i jus said move your light to the other corner and ill giv you a ring tomorrow to see if its fixed,

and wouldnt you believe it she was over the moon,

i then told her what the issue was

simple solution to a simple problem:)

    Just an update.
Somebody opened up the thermostat and fiddled with the dial.... It's working right now, ie clicking at around 20 degrees mark.

Great stuff. Always prefrable to be able to resolve these issues without replacing parts.

In techy speak you have "calibrated" the stat.
