Saorview with HDD DVD recorder queries

I am going to purchase a Saorview-approved STB as my television is not compatible.

I have no external aerial (previously had a Sky subscription but cancelled. Now just using the box to get the FTA channels) so I presume I'll need to get one installed on the roof?

Will it be possible to connect my Sony HDD DVD recorder to the Saorview STB so that I can record programmes from Saorview? It's already recording programmes from the old Sky box.

If so, do I need to get a STB with two SCART connections?

    Thanks.

The aerial location will depend on how good the signal strength is at your location. External roof aerial is always best but loft/attic could also work in good signal areas. Set top aerial also work in strong signal areas but prone to local interference.

The Sony recorder should work OK via the scart but you will only be able to record the channel you're watching, all Saorview approved STBs have only one tuner I believe.

Thanks very much - that's very informative. I can live with recording what I am watching.

Just thinking - that set up doesn't really allow for connecting the old Sky box to the DVD recorder as well as the Saorview STB. Lack of scarts. Swapping each time would be a pain.

What other connections does your Sony HDD DVD have?

They usually have 2 scarts, s-video, composite.

You could run sky/saorview off the 2 scarts and then output to your tv through composite.

Does your Sony recorder use Guide+?

'cos if it does you might be able to use your G-link infrared cable to change the channels remotely on your Saorview box, though you will have to make the settings on the Sony.

Hi. This thread might suit me.
I use an old dvd recorder which is still working fine. The lead from my antenna goes into the recorder which is then connected to the tv.
If I buy a Saorview tv does that mean that I wont be able to record anything that comes via Saorview?
Would I be better off just buying a Box and going Antenna-Box-Recorder-old TV?
    Hope that makes sense.
(Used to know everything about tellys when they had valves and I had good eyesight).

Yes but you can continue to record the existing 3/4 analogue channels you currently receive until about Oct 2012 with the dvd recorder.

That's an option but any of the current Saorview approved boxes will only output 1 channel at a time so you will only be able to record and watch the same channel.

Saorview PVRs should be available in due course which will allow you record up to 2 channels or watch 1/record 1.

I have been searching for over a year for a DVD Recorder with MPEG4 tuner for over a year now with no success.

Some of the Freeview HD Blu Ray recorders might do the trick (possibly with impaired EPG functionality ???) but theyre still ludicrously expensive :(

If you get a STB that will act as a PVR, you will be able to record programmes onto an external USB hard disk drive. You could get a second (different one so that the remotes do not clash) and use that for watching different programmes. If the second one is a combi box, you can use it for FTA satellite.
