Well first off you'll need to back up any files folders in your profile folder you'll want to keep. The likes of what's on the desktop or in your documents. (music/pictures).

Any program you've installed you'll need to re-install after the wipe. So if you have the original disks or you can download the files again. (the likes of iTunes).

Also beware of drivers. Ensure you have disks or can download drivers for your machines' hardware.

Intel.com have a scanner utility that you can run and it will check for you. Other than that you may need to go to the manufacturers site and download them there.

The first thing would be to get the NIC drivers. Without them you can't connect to the net.

Also regarding ms office. You won't be able to re-install that without the disk and key. Do you use Outlook? You'll need to back up your .pst file if you wanted to transfer that across.

I'm trying to think if I left anything out!

Once you reinstall your machine and have everything setup make sure to clone the drive so you don't have to go through the process again.

A restore of a clone will be done in a fraction of the time it takes to re-install!

I had to put 7 on last sunday due to a vista update that comprehensively knackered my main pc. Didn't get a chance to back everything up beforehand but now have a 'windows.old' folder that contains the old desktop & files.

What's missed most are bookmarks and browser passwords & outlook mails. Application media, licence codes plus any customised application templates & files.

I use one of these progs to cover some of the important stuff like Internet settings, Windows Live Mail settings, message rules etc, the messages themselves and My Documents. You can also set up any other folders that you want backed up.

The one thing that it doesn't back up is any email password, which they tell me the program can't access because of W7 security.
