Interested to see how this one turns out. I was a big fan of the director Céline Sciamma's surprisingly provocative debut Water Lillies, and this seems to be taking her favoured themes of sexual confusion and gender identity a little more literally than that did. Could potentially be in-your-face, but looks like an intriguing alternative to your typical coming-of-age movie.

Out in the IFI on Friday!

Saw this today. Lots of interesting ideas, if the general plot is predictable and formulaic. Plenty of well delivered thoughts on the way we establish identities for ourselves as kids, and about how gender roles are hardwired into society. Potentially controversial, the ideas are delivered by a fantastic child cast is instead very carefully and sensitively, and Sciamma never makes it feel weird (although a scene with playdough is uncomforably hilarious). Not much in the way of inventive visuals, and an almost non existent score (one track by Water Lillies composer Para One). The story is generally engaging, albeit a bit disappointing that it doesn't go in many surprising ways. Realistic portrayal of childhood innocence though.

Not as impressive as Water Lillies, but worth a gander none the less.
