Getting totally frustrated with Saorview

I've had Saorview a few months now, courtesy of a Walker set-top box and to be honest I'm starting to feel tempted to throw it out.

There's the freezing of programs (markedly worse in the morning or early afternoon for some reason) that is very annoying and means I have to resort to plugging it out in order to watch something properly at times. Have had a tv repair guy replace my aerial lead and check things out but still the problem persists.

Now, the remote control won't work, it stopped working last week, I rang Walker in Dublin and paid €20 for a replacement remote, that worked for 1.5 days and now that's died too.

Rang them again and they said to return to shop where Walker box was purchased and bring the 2 remotes. Wondering if I'd be better off asking for a refund than to be sent home with a replacement box, it's so much bloody trouble.

Anyone else having problems with the Walker box?

Freezing on DTT is usually caused by low SNR, bad cabling, GSM interference or over amplification. did the installer have a proper digital Aerial meter, what did he say the BER or MER were, Is it a loft Aerial? is there a tetra or band filter installed before the masthead Amplifier?

But in saying all that the earlier walker boxes are shít, so much for certification.

Yep, all it means is that the equipment complies with the Saorview specification. It doesn't consider build quality or other items that influence reliability or the user experience.

That's generally when work is done at transmitter sites. Check Aertel page 169

Got a Walker Saorveiw set top box about a month ago.. worked fine in my apartment fine on a standard indoor Ariel .. few days moved and i now live in a housing estate in a shared house.. doesn't work at all when i turn it on it just says no information.. so i reset it and tried searching for channels and nothing returns accept for "please check your antenna connection" Very frustrating.. Please help as i'm tempted to smash it >.<

This is with the same indoor aerial? You're not guaranteed the same signal strength & quality everywhere, a better aerial may be needed.

Does the house have an aerial on the roof or in the attic?

no theres no Ariel outside but i brought it to my mams house where she has saorveiw and works with an indoor Ariel and it didnt work either.. something wrong with the box maybe?

Did you try it on the same aerial as your mother's Saorview receiver?

The signal available indoors can vary with even small movements of the aerial, so you'd have to ensure you use an aerial that's known to be working & keep it in the location where it works.

Yes but some reason i think Saorveiw isn't as good as they make out.. Probably better off with Sky or UPC

'They' didn't make it out to be anything revolutionary, take a look here; http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/

If you tried it with the aerial your mother uses for Saorview at her house and you still get no service then it sounds like a receiver fault, maybe damaged in the move. As it's only about a month old return it to where you purchased it. No point blaming Saorview for the faulty receiver.

A point to remember is indoor aerials are best in strong signal areas but are still subject to local interference.

Cable TV requires a subscription and maybe a cable tv decoder from the cable company. Will not work with the Walker Saorview box.

    Where are you located?

Is someone in the shared house currently paying for the cable TV connection?

No the landlord just said there's cable tv..

Well no-one is claiming that Saorview will be better than Sky or UPC, but there is the big difference of price.

Saorview is free and always will be.

The others charge a lot of money to watch TV and give you X number of channels when you actually only watch 10% or less of them.

Granted.. But i'm only here short term.. so would be nice to have cable television here.

Da wha? I'm clueless on all that technological lingo. I called a guy out (he's pretty reputable to be honest, recommended by the electrical store where I bought the Saorview box) and he said it was working fine (which it was while he was there and 90% of the time at night it's fine but during daytime it's atrociously bad. Sound moves on but you're stuck with a frozen picture for up to 1.5 minutes. It's an external aerial, two of them actually, I think one is meant to pick up RTE and the other TV3 and TG4. Both connected through the one cable.

I took the Walker box back to the shop and got a new one which (fingers crossed) will keep working, though still frustrated with the freezing and I do end up giving up on it occasionally and watching the tv in my bedroom that works perfect on all channels with rabbits ears.

I think Sky will rejoice when the analogue gets switched off as it seems the only way to guarantee good reception is gonna be through them or UPC, etc.

Get perfect reception myself, two different rooms two different tuners.

if you get perfect reception off your rabbit ears for analogue you should try that for your digital too.
