Where to find decent knitwear?

I realised that I have absolutely nothing to wear to work now that it's getting colder, so I took advantage of a half day to go to the shops and treat myself to a few new things. Went into Topshop and saw loads of lovely warm knitwear........except when I touched it, it was all acrylic! I can't wear anything acrylic, as it makes me hot, sweaty, itchy and causes my skin to break out. Even the stuff which was quite expensive was 85%+ acrylic, with a tiny bit of wool mix. Went to H&M, Zara and Urban Outfitters and it was the same old story there as well. The only nice thing I saw was a red V-neck cashmere sweater in Zara, but it was £75!

Does anywhere sell knitwear that isn't made from manmade fibres? I've seen reasonably price wool stuff in Uniqlo, so I'll check there, but should I just give up on the high street?

This thread is up over in arts & crafts, so I'd say there's some cheap knitwear coming out in a charity shop near you soon, not sure how fashionable it will be though!

Gap and Massimo Dutti spring to mind, but not sure how much will be 100% wool, some have polyester or acrylic in the mix for shape. A lot of brands I think would have pure wool would be on the expensive side. If you just want plain, John Lewis should have some stuff I would have thought. Oh and M&S should definitely have.

I'll try M&S and MD, thanks! It doesn't have to be 100% wool, but at least 50% might be bearable. I've noticed that most shops are using almost all manmade fibres now. :(

Are there any woollen mills you could get to? I don't know how fashionable they'd be either, but they'd be wool.

Urban Outfitters had a few cardigans and jumpers when I was in there last. Granted they are a bit pricey but they're good quality and they have a few "Arran wool"-esque cardis

  • In case anyone is interested, I found a load of lovely jumpers and cardigans in United Colors of Benetton, most were 100% wool and around £30-£40, which I think is really reasonable. No need for acrylic stuff now, phew!

TK Maxx, I've bought a good few jumpers and cardigans in there already this year. They have a lot of cashmere and angora wool for under thirty euro, well worth a look!

Tbh topshop, zara, h&m are all the wrong places! I was in your position but got sick of it as they looked mega warm and cosy but ended up being as warm as wearing a tshirt!

+1 for M&S, I'm a teenager and even managed to find a lovely 100% cashmere cardigan in there on sale for a twelve euro. Also try the Irish shop on Nassau street just by Reids(may be called Donegal but most likely wrong) they do a wide range of 100% wool stuff at good prices and frequently have sales :D Got a 100% wool red tartan scarf in there for a tenner after refusing to buy the exact same one in UO for 20 which was 100% acrylic!

I was the same on Saturday grumbling about the same thing. Knitwear this year is crap, crap crap. I didn't see anything I liked at all.

In saying that Wallis tend to have fairly ok knitwear, with some acrylic content but it's definately better quality that a lot of what's out there. They are the same company as topshop but the quality seems a bit better. Esprit also had a few nice pieces but they were expensive enough. I have picked up a few bits in Gap over the years as well but nothing caught my eye on Saturday.
