Ticket confusion

The other day I was in Dublin City Centre, and I had to make two train journeys. The first was from Tara Street to Grand Canal Dock, and the second, a short while later, was from Grand Canal Dock to Connolly. I got a ticket for the first leg in Tara Street, and used it to exit the station in Grand Canal Dock.

Now on the second journey, I got a ticket from Grand Canal Dock, and used it to get onto the platform. Disembarking at Connolly however, I accidentally used the ticket for my first journey to open the barrier, and it worked.

    Is this normal?

For anyone who doesn't know the line, it goes

    A - Connolly
    B - Tara St
    C - Pearse St
    D - Grand Canal.

So I got a ticket from B to D, but that ticket let me off the platform at A as well! I'd understand how it would work if I was in Pearse St, which is in between the two stations on the ticket, but not how it would work in Connolly, which is outside the line covered by the original journey.

Can anyone explain this? Apologies if this is unclear, please tell me so and I'll rewrite it.

It's probably because there was a journey left on the ticket

AFAIK, all the city centre stops (Connolly/Tara/Pearse) are considered equal. Their fares from any other station are the same, and I guess the system also allows you to disembark at any of them, regardless of what was actually printed on the ticket.

How was there though? I used it to get out at Grand Canal, so I had reached my destination; it wasn't a return ticket or anything.

Ah, that makes sense. Cheers for clearing that up.
