I am a post-grad student and will be starting the Masters in E-commerce (business) course in DCU on the 26th.

The issue I have is with next week and whether I need to attend the full 'immersion/orientation week'. I got one letter in the post last week with information on how to register online etc. On the back of the form, it says undergraduate orientation is from the 19th (9am) to the 23rd of September and the Postgraduate orientation is on the 23rd of September from 3pm to 6pm.

I contacted the DCU registry and they said as a post-grad I would only need to attend on Friday from 3-6pm (she didn't seem too sure though). However, I got an email a day earlier that conflicted with that and said I had to attend the whole week.

Anyone with any idea on when I need to attend?

I have got postgrad starting on 26th and told nothing about orientation. I cant do a week of it as finishing work on the Friday. I could make the Friday 3-6pm.

It does seem fairly ambiguous as to when we have to attend.

I think I might just go to the 3-6pm on the Friday, unless I get some more information in the next few days...

    Hi there,

I've just finished the MBS in Marketing, which is a related programme to the E-Commerce Business programme, along with the MSc in Business Management (the three classes do NGM together, but you'll know all about that soon!)

The first week is the Immersion Course, it is exclusive to these three courses so wouldn't apply to the general postgrad student body, and it is unlikely the registry would necessarily know about it!

It is mandatory attendance, and is an intensive week worth 5 credits, to prepare you for the year ahead. If you don't attend, you'll effectively have failed your first module (at least that was the case last year!)

Best of luck with the year ahead!

    Thanks for the information.

Would you be able to give me some more info about what is involved in this immersion course? i.e How long are the days, what it entails etc.

It's basically designed to prepare you for the course, and give you an idea of what to expect from it. The NGM courses are very intense, and it's a tough year in terms of the amount of work. Because the immersion course is meant to give you an idea of what to expect, it's pretty intense and the days are long, full 9-5s. They'll go through the course content as well as giving you an introduction to skills you'll need throughout the year, such as consultancy, working in a team, presentations etc.

You won't have the 9-5 in lectures once you get into the semester but your time will be taken up with assignments and group meetings. There is a lot of independent learning.

You do learn a lot though, and the courses put you in a great position to enter the workplace, but be prepared for a tough year! I didn't really know how intense it was going to be, and the NGM courses really are intense, so best to know before you start! However, they're very reputable and have a great employment rate in great workplaces.
