well..... generally not bad for so old car, once there is no paddles of oil under car, it is fine. engine bay needs some attention, id say camshaft oil seal leaking, reason why it wet there, coolant pipes need clean, refit with proper new clip, check gearbox oil level, as if there is low level over leaking, oil starvation may damage gearbox. Over engine bay condition seems to previous owners not really care about car, but at least honest... some do clean before sell, and new buyer has trouble source oil/coolant leakages.
Do some good service on it, change oil, filters, spark plug lead with sparkplugs, check coolant, if rusty there, then get flushed with some chemicals, put proper coolant, as winter on the way, also i presume in rusty water thermostat is non functional. Also check or change all belts.

The self adjusting clutch cable used to give trouble in the Golfs, that may be the cause of your slipping clutch though chances are it may be too late if it has been slipping a while.

It looks very similar to the diesel gearbox and I have done them on the ground on my own. Worse part of the job is getting the bolts open on the inner drive joints. If some donkey has been there before it can be a royal pain in the arse.

That place that rents out the lifts is in Tallaght IIRC

agree..... done myself few on driveway, and some in garage...... air tools would really great there.

the oil on the cam cover is probably coming from the PCV pipes pver the engine, and what look like some kind of honking big oil separator over the engine. check the oil hoses coming off the engine are not split or full of gunk. Both cause oil loss, though to be honest that engine bay looks untidy, rather tha n urgent work needed. Depends how much oil is being lost.

Why is there oil so far up the engine? Some is pumped up to lube the cam bearings, pump up hydraulic tappets, and some is an oil mist that forms when the engine gets hot, this is useful for lubrication, esepecially cams / valves. It also can go out the pipes mentioned, a certain amount here is normal, even good.

thanks for all the replys there's some really great advice lads I priced a diy garage it was 120 for the day and a clutch kit was 150. I rang loads of places and found a garage that would do the clutch for 350 so i'd only be saving about 50 quid when u take petrol and Id need a hand if one of my friends agreed to help I'd have to feed him. I think I'll get clutch done in garage but i'm determined to do the rest of the work myself I've to price all the service items and I'll post pics of how I get on. there's a large enough dent on the wing I'm going to try a hairdryer and compressed gas way of fixing it I'll let u's know if it works because the car is worth much money I don't mind trying it out
