    Hi,
I have a new HTC sensation and 1G free data. The support guy says as long as I only check the internet 30mins approx a day that I should stay within the bundle. That seems v little. How is it that some people seem to get constant up-dates of emails and Facebook msgs i.e. must have their internet on all day? Is my data limit small compared to the average? I thought it would be plenty.
or am I missing something? can u get social network/email up-dates without having internet on constantly? Thanks. This is all very new.

First thing that you need is an App that allows you to monitor your data usage so that you don't go over the 1Gb of data. Here is one that I use - 3G Watchdog - it tells you how much you will use if you continue to use the data the way you are going and how much left etc.

I have a HTC Desitre & 1 GB data package - use it going to and from work & a few times during the day, and have never gone over my allowance. I guess everyone is different & with the 3G app and a month or 2 of usage, you will get to know how much you need etc.

But if you do have WiFi at home, best to do any app downloads aand heavy stuff on that rather than using your monthly allowance.

You can set your accounts to only sync once every hour, or once a day, or every 5 minutes if you want. I have my Gmail set to sync every 3 minutes or whatever, and I automatically refresh Facebook and Twitter whenever I want to use them. I also have an app that shuts off my data connection when my phone is locked, and then it turns it back on when I unlock the phone.

You should be able to manage a gig no problem.

Hope to OP doesn't mind if I butt in with a quick question. What app are you using to control your data connection?

Install 3G watchdog and keep an eye on your data, in my experience its very hard to use up your allowance, unless watching lots of Youtube clips our something. Don't worry about it.

Oh, and gmail uses push email, so you receive new messages instantly, no need to refresh or check periodically.

Simply yes you can constantly get updates. My phones constantly receiving e-mail, RSS feeds, facebook, twitter, G+, internet and id rarely go about 4/500 mb a month. Make sure youre connected to Wi-Fi at home & dont go mad on Youtube/Flash videos, set the flash plugin to on-demand too and you wont come close to 1gb.
In my experience a lot of sales staff will either talk nonsense or really err on the safe side so they dont have people coming back complaining about going over their data usage & getting charged for it.

brilliant, thanks to all.lots of ideas there. think the wi-fi at home will help especially for downloading things. however i am still a bit confused about the person who has constant up-dates from FB, twitter etc, bit. do u have your mob internet on constant then? Sorry, a bit thick here. :(

Yeah, you can set the update frequency your self on most apps, with Tweetdeck for example you can set the update frequency for each column (Facebook, Twitter, replies, mentions etc.) individually.

I have mine on constantly, updating as often as I like, but this will have a more pronounced effect on your battery than your data allowance.
I don't even check my data allowance any more, as now I have settled into a pattern of usage, there's simply no need.

Yep. Mines on constantly with most things updating every half hour. I get push notifications for e-mail, facebook & twitter so I just let them come as they come
