Welcome opinions please. looking to replace my car, straight deal, no trade in

Have two young kids, 3 and new born baby so need something with a big boot. I am driving about 50 miles each day from Maynooth into Dublin, looking for something economical, will hold its value relatively ( as change the car every 2-3 years or so) - had bad experience before with French and Italian cars so will not touch them. Do not want to go over a 2.0 litre car.

Had been looking at Passat Diesels, estate would be my prefence but price range means high milers. also someome said to me that driving in rush hour may negaate the fuel savings on diesel, not sure how true this is.

I did have a look at the passat 1.4 TSI petrol, good value car, VW claim to get 42 mpg from this..any ideas anyone, i hate paying for fuel and road tax so any thoughts/experiences would be most welcome

    What about something like this

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Opel/Astra/Estate-1/201132203884668/advert?channel=CARS

Cheap tax, good fuel economy and enough space for two kids in the back and a large enough boot. It doesn't have to be this engine though there is also a 1.7 cdti which on the old system has cheap enough tax too.

    Just a thought...

I drive the same route every day and switching to a diesel more than halved my fuel bill. Top end of you budget should get you in an '08 mondeo or similar. Manufacturers figuers for mpg are almost always on the optomistic side.

Forgot to say, friend has a tsi golf and averages 35MPG, would expect the passat to do slightly worse....

think i will have to rule out the vw tsi, if gold only getting 35 mpg, passat would probably only manage 32 or so, shame, good price and insurance for the tsi was onyl €20 more for the year compared to a 1.3 colt, do not think they realised the bhp.
Skoda ok but not in that colour, only some cars can pull off white.

anyone got experience of the focus estate 1.6 diesel, is this the same engine as the 407 etc which seem to have turbo issues

I have a 2005 VW Passat estate tdi highline.

I cannot fault the car tbh - full leather, air con, electric all round, heated seats.

The boot is generous - I'd even say it's bigger than the boot of a Touareg.

As for MPG - even been driven hard albeit on a motorway it goes well and you would be hard pushed to not get over 40mpg if not 44mpg IME.

I even sneaked it over 50mpg once or twice on long runs.
