    Hi Lads,

Friend of mine got one over the weekend and was just looking for advice. One thing she noticed is it's killing the laptop it's pulling from, any solutions for this??

What's the best things to do with this box? Jailbreaking for boxee? Jailbreaking for Plex and playing from a hd?? She's above in Dublin so I would have to send on instructions on Jailbreaking so they'd want to be pretty easy.

Any other sw you can recommend for it?? I'm hearing things about Vuze??

    Thanks
    Gary

What do you mean by this?

Im gonna give my 2 bits on this...

I recently got an ATV2 and decided to jailbreak it..It took me ages to do it on 4.3...After ALOT of hard work on it ,I have it Jailbroke and running XBMC and I find it brilliant..
I ended up Jailbreaking with seasonpass and then flashing it with ATV Flash Black..

The only thing is ,I wouldn't recommend anybody who doesn't know what they are doing to do this...because you will run into problems.

This is my experience with it.To be honest if I had of known the crap I was going to get I would have bought a Boxee Box.

I still think I will get one for the sittingroom and put my ATV2 in the bedroom.

I'm only getting this second hand but I'm guessing the ATV2 is streaming from the laptop or something?? Which is slowing down the laptop? I could be very wrong on this but I'm guessing that's what's going on.

Had a look at the jailbreak on here:

Obviously nothing is as easy as it's made out to be but anyone know about this one??

Dont know about the laptop issue,In theory it shouldnt affect her performance though as all you doing is using files(music,Films) that are stored on the HD

I do it this way from my IMac with no issues at all

I also tried that method of Jailbreaking that you posted the link for but it wouldn't work no matter what I tried...
After a successful jailbreak I couldn't get the "Inject Software" tab on the menu to come up..

    Hope this helps

Nice one for that, I won't send that on to her so until I get a bit of feedback on the best way to upgrade.

Another stupid question, will it play files from a HD plugged in the back?

Hope you don't mind if I jump in here with a related question...

Got present of an Apple Tv and connected it up today. Watched a few vids and noticed that they ran for about 3 mins before stopping while waiting for a further download. HD vids are extremely slow to load. Makes me wonder what will happen if I rent a movie. I have a standard Eircom-supplied router with a broadband speed rated at being 'up to 8Mb'.

Can I expect a similar stop/start situation with films?
Would downloading the film to the PC first make a difference? I don't suppose it'll download any differently but watching it afterwards might be smoother?

Typically, how much data does a film consist of? I have a combined limit of 30Gb. Any issues there?

I'll be very grateful for any replies.

    Thanks.

You mean a speed of up to 8 Mb/s and a download cap of 30 GB. (One byte = 8 bits.)

A compressed movie is likely to be less than 1GB.

    Thank for that.

Sorry about the mistake. It's a combined upload and download allowance of 30GB

And I think an hd film will be more like 4 to 5 gb. I don't rent hd films directly via my apple tv as my 3 mb line isn't sufficient. Sd film rental is fine. If I want to rent hd I do it via iTunes in advance and then stream. If you are getting buffering then I would do a speedtest to find the real download speed for your line

Perfect. Exactly what I wanted to know, thanks.

Check how he is sharing in iTunes. Has he Home Sharing and Share my Stuff turned on at the same time? If he does then turn off the Share my Stuff options as it is duplicating the work of Home Sharing. See attached for good setup
