Heart rate question

I was out for a run with my brother last week. He has a fair bit of running done in the past including 2 marathons. He only runs now at weekends. At around 6.5 or 7 miles his heart rate started dropping and dropping and eventually disappeared of his Garmin until after we had stopped. He had a fair bit to drink the previous weekend. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on why the heart rate dropped so suddenly and would the alcohol have any thing to do with it. Thanks.

Maybe he needs to replace the battery in his heart rate monitor?

I'd imagine this was coincidental to him being out the night before and more a hardware issue. Garmins are not 100% reliable so unless he actually flatlined in front of you (Hopefully he didn't!) then I'd put it down to a quirk of the Garmin. Perhaps the electrodes on the HRM were too dry and therefore stopped registering his HR or else the battery in the HRM needs replacing.
In situations where anomalies like this arise it's always better to go 'old school' and physically check the pulse...it's likely it remained consistent while the Garmin played up...

Thanks for the reply folks. I told him to change his battery and i found out he doesn't wet the electrodes before using it.
