I have a daughter in 5th year doing honours maths without a maths book because the Active maths book is not available.
I have a son in 6th year honours maths who is waiting for the up to date past exam papers to be printed.
How can this happen after all the talk about the importance of maths and science ?

Could be worse. I have parents coming in to buy laptops for 8 year olds because thats how their teachers are saying they need to do their homework.

I have a wife who constantly managed 2.5 times the national average for A's and B's in the LC,( usually with the weaker classes) but is not allowed teach the subject anymore because maths is not on her degree. She was told by the department that her results / track record and experience are not important regarding being able to teach the subject.

    www.examinations.ie

Up to date exam papers there.

The department doesn't write textbooks, its up to teachers and authors to write these moneyspinners. It sould be possible to learn a course without a textbook if the teacher is good enough and provides their own notes and examples. Which they should, because school books are too ****ing expensive.

Because the department are not publishers. Your fifth year students should be fine for the moment, chances are they are starting with algebra which isn't all that different in the new course though they may have to mind photocopies in the meantime! If your sixth year student is looking for papers to get started on check out examinations.ie, the pilot school exam papers are up there for the last 2 years. Only paper 2 has changed so there are tons of paper 1s up there to use as well. Hope that helps

Keep the unions happy first and foremost...

Whole education system is too preoccupied with talking about education theory and academic discussions on the best teaching methods. Don't know how I ever managed to learn anything!

Simple solution, bring laptops into schools. It would be cheaper considering the absurd cost of school books and copies. It would also be more efficient as a method for giving notes to students(E-mail them instead of ****ing around with notes in class).

As a bonus students don't end up with back problems from carrying around heavy books all day.

Be careful though, I hear the Americans have a whole different range of stuff they call math instead of maths.
