Maybe contact your local cycling club to ask to help out.
Atthat time of year many cyclists would be looking for an event to help kick start the season.

Choose your route (long and short if possible). For the time of the year I would suggest a short route of 50-70km and a long route of no more than say 120km.

Try if possible to have the route go in such a direction that you dont have to cross a junction (ie go anticlock wise - all left turns at junctions).

Figure out how many marshalls you require. To stand at junctions to alert vehicle traffic that there is a cycle on. Similar with regards to signage.
Signage advising of a cycle should be put out the evening before.

Sweep the corners at junctions of road debris, gravel etc.

Figure out where you will put a water stop (halfway is good). You will need someplace where the cyclists can come off the road to pick up water/tea/coffee/quick refreshment.

Arrange some food at the finish. Sambos, soup, cake, buns, salty food, drinks. etc

Figure out then how much food/water you need at the refreshment stop and the finish.

Arrange showers. In Feb a warm shower would be great after a cycle.

First aid - do you have any back up? Speak with St John Ambulance etc.
Speak with Gardai to advise them that there will be a cycle that will be taking place.

Broomwagon/support: This is to pick up folks that cannot make it home due to punctures, mechanicals etc. A mini van or jeep should do.

Many (most IMHO) charity cycles are not covered by Cycling Ireland insurance. You need to decide do you want to run an event outside of Cycling Ireland. Shouldnt be an issue.

Cost - how much do you want to raise and what will your fixed and variable outgoings be? This will guide yoou in how much you need to charge as an entry fee.
TBH, most people wouldnt expect to pay more tha €20 for a winter/spring event. The big ccycles of the summer get away with charging €40, but most cycles could not attract participants with a €40 charge.

Then figure out how to charge - online entry or cash on the day.

But honestly, you should liase with your local cycling or triathalon club that may have experience in putting on an event involving cyclists.

Finally ask the mods to move this out of adverts and into the main forum.

    Best of luck.

The best idea would probably be to go on a charity cycle or any of the sportives on around the country and get a feel for whats involved. Not sure if there are any left at the moment. Or get involved with one that is already running and see how you can help out. How many people do you want at this thing? And what sort of distance? What level of cyclist?

I would really not under estimate whats involved in a project like this if you are come from a "I have no idea what to do" start point.

Or are you and your friend planing to go on a long cycle and get sponsored for it?

Is this going to be a mass participation thing or something he's doing on his own? :)

If it's the former, keep me in the loop I'd be very interested in taking part/helping out.

Edit: Actually even if he's doing it on his own, I'll be happy to help bucket shaking and what have you.
