XP Virtual mode in Win 7 Pro

I have a work piece of equipment that I need to connect via ethernet port but the software only allows XP. I installed virtual PC XP mode to my Win 7 Pro work laptop and software loaded nicely. But, I cannot seem to get ethernet comms to my equipment.

When you use XP mode, does the comms setup in this apply to the comms in the main win 7 window or does ethernet comms actailly work at all. For example, the win7 IP address of the port was set to default and obtains IP address automatically. I need a fixed IP and set the address in XP for the same port as fixed. Which one is in full control ?

I then matched the win 7 and XP IP addresses to the same fixed IP but for could not establish comms with the software even though the unit appeared to be communicating via the ethernet port (I could see a 10mps connection). I could ping the unit in Win 7 but not in XP. But, i could ping the card in XP mode.

So, after all that, is XP virtual mode able to use ethernet comms at all. It has some links at the top of it's screen to add USB devices such as mice etc. but no mention of ehternet there. All the XP screens appear as you would expect and I am assuming I am controlling the eithernet card.

    Any help with this appreciated.
