X Factor USA Versus The Late Late Show

TV3 are going to broadcast the US version of X Factor on Friday nights, going against The Late Late Show on RTE1. It will start Friday week.

Great move by TV3 - viewers will flock to watch some entertainment on a weekend night instead of the dreariness of the LLS. It may force them to change the format of the programme, dropping the serious sections and keeping it light.

RTE must be very frustrated about TV3's decision!

After a limp couple of opening episodes, maybe this will force RTE to reach beyond the canteen when polling for guests (and do more than just research by google/wiki for the rest).

Maybe we should start a campaign to get tv3 to air x factor Australia too, that would take care of Monday and Tuesday too

I think they're going to show two hours of the US X Factor on Friday nights. This is the first real threat that the LLS has had from TV3.

Why is the LLS still on for two hours? They clearly can't get good enough guests to fill out that timespan.

What are you on about? The X Factor is pure gutter trash ****e. I somehow doubt the Late Late Show viewers are going to flock to TV3 for that.

X Factor has a massive following. People are going to tune in to see what happened to Cole and the fact that Cowell is one of the judges. It's going to make a huge dent in LLS's viewing figures.

A massive following of what age group? Compare that with the age group that are watching the Late Late Show.

Hi very much doubt that the Late Late Show's audience is going to go in droves to watch the X-Factor. TV3 have tried on numerous occasions to go up against the Late Late Show, and failed in every one of those. The solution is simple; stop trying. X-Factor targets a completely different demographic than the Late Late Show, and so there will be two different audiences. TV3 might actually win some of the UK channel watching audience, but it's not likely that they'll take much from RTE. The only real battle here is TV3 Vs ITV/BBC.

More people will leave RTE on a Friday night for the simple reason that the Late Late Show is shite, than for watching X-Factor.

X Factor is popular among all age groups and both men and women. It will take viewers away from the LLS.

It could have an impact though. In houses with teenagers and parents, the teens are going to want to watch X Factor, the parents prob watch it usually on a Saturday anyway...and with Late Late being so crap will give up the Friday night routine of having it on to switch to TV3.

Can see this being a good move by TV3 and hopefully will be the final nail in the coffin of the outdated LLS and especially Tubridy.

I never thought I'd say it, but there's now actually a chance that I'll actually watch The Late Late!

Mind you, it's amazing that neither station could be arsed putting on something decent - OK if during the Celtic Tiger fiasco where lots of people weren't even home, but nowadays there's an opportunity for a station to grab a significant audience by simply airing something worthwhile.

Obviously neither station wants to bother.

All I can say is praise allah for the internet because otherwise I'd be an alcoholic having to go out every Friday night.

X Factor USA starts this Friday at 9PM on TV3.

No sign of any high profile guests for the LLS this week - it could suffer a big loss of viewers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

It's actually happened.. I agree with hotmail.com on something.. gonna print it out and have it framed...

I think it could do serious damage to Tubridy's rating... The mid section of last week's program was very boring.. If there is a similarly boring/depressing segement in the show this week, people will just change on to something lighter..

So American Idol, noone watched, relegated to 3E I think even, but give it a new name and its now gonna take on Ireland's biggest show (even if viewers are dwindling).

Im totally lost, I mean Simon was in Idol, indeed so was Paula in the earlier ones and we;'re hardly tuning in for the other two. And the whole format is the exact same besides pedantics.

Or are we just tuning in to look and laugh at Cheryl??????????????/

It is television for simpletons. If you ever see it, watch the crowd cheer for some sparks falling from the ceiling behind the karaoke singer or some bright lights. So putting some slag who graces the cover of Heat magazine on the show will mean they will all watch it. That is the type of individual that watches this **** week after week.

    LLS is better?

I never suggested it was. I do not watch that either but am I correct to assume that you agree with my assessment of the x factor?

The LLS is too colour by numbers for me and having a plank of wood presenting does it no favours.

To suggest that the core LLS audience will enjoy the x factor though is far fetched.

I never thought the LLS would lose out to X Factor USA. What I suggested was that TV3 would take a good portion of the LLS's audience.

I would be interested to see how it did as well.. I didnt watch it, so they are down one anyway.. ;-) I guess we'll have to wait for The Herald to find out.. They normally like giving Tubs a weekly kicking..

It might say in the papers today or tomo if it was a big chunk. If it wasn't then it won't be mentioned.

    From Mediaworks Twitter:
The first episode of the X-Factor USA peaked at 292,100 viewers. Sunday night's X-Factor UK peaked at 397,400.

We'll see though when the average figure comes out in a while if it dented LLS.

    In from medialive:

    RTE 1:
9:30 The Late Late Show 514,000

    TV3:
    9:00 X Factor US 268,000

The Secret Millionaire knocked TLLS off the number one spot aswell. Be interesting to see how The Apprentice will do against it on Monday.

That is really bad for the LLS, one of the lowest figures for the show that I've ever seen. X Factor USA clearly took a big chunk of viewers off the LLS.

The presidential debate that is taking place this Friday may boost the LLS audience but only slightly given the format that is proposed.

Each candidate will be interviewed on their own and then there will be a debate with all of the candidates at the end (Norris won't get a solo interview because he got an appearance two weeks ago). To me, that format sounds extremely boring, particularly with 7 candidates. I can imagine viewers turning off in their thousands.

And Jedward will appear as well..so basically viewers are down, let's get Jedward on. This must be their 6th or 7th appearance on the LLS.

I can imagine viewers not even bothering turning it on - either programme!

I reckoned he would lose about 200k alright.. that's a serious hit... on that recent Tubridy interview he's been banging on about "oh we had the highest figures for this, and the highest figures for that"... This shows the fact that's he's had NO competition is a serious contributing factor (if you excuse the pun :D ) to the show's high figures..

Like I said before.. It's a Friday night.. a load of people with no money to go out... probably just after listening to nothing but depressing stories on the 9 O'clock News.. they arent gonna sit through Tubridy's Terminal Tribulation section of the show. They will just change over to something a little less depressing...

The LLS has been low all year.
