Recording Saorview - question please

This has probably been asked before, but if your tv doesn't have usb recording option , what are the options open to you to record saorview programmes??

I heard that current DVD recorders with built-in HDDs wont work, is that right?

any other options? Ideally like as close as possible to a sky+ set-up equivalent for the saorview.

the tv in question is (apparently):

    Type: Samsung LE32B653
    Model LE32B653TSWXBT

which i can't seem to find out too much info on.

Its not on the list of tvs that support saorview either on the stickied thread on here or on the official website but it s picking up saorview cause it is displaying the RTE 2 HD DOG.

Also, the tv is picking up both didital and analogue signals and is mixing them up so that they have rt2 2 thru saorview and have tv3 thru analogue, etc...

how do I stop this from happening and get the Digital broadcasts only...??

    Many thanks

As long as your saorview/freesat/fta box has a scart connection, I don't believe the new advancements will have any bearing on your DVD recorder with built-in HDD.

Regarding your PVR query. I think this machine works as a Saorview PVR.

Well, it can show the Irish Digital Stations anyways, I'm not sure if it has the proper 7 Day EPG though?

I have one of these, records Saorview perfectly, has the 7 day EPG, but no series link - dont believe anything has this at present.

Well given the fact that your TV already is Saorview compatable, and you can watch TV on the TV, you could also get this Humax instead, get a cheap HDD and your're off.

It has it limitations too however, single tuner so unable to record two programs at once. I have this box in a bed room as the TV isn't Saorview compatable.

I'd hold off buying a PVR for a little bit, I'm liking the Humax linked above but am holding off until word on Series Link is out.

Sony have a nice looking PVR too see here

im confused by this one, whats the difference between this one and the one on richersounds??

is the only difference the lack of 500gb HDD? cause if thats it then surely that one on richersounds s overpriced

the one I liked has only a single tuner so you can only record one channel and watch a second, provided the channels are on the same mux, a second mux is due to fire up soon and tht could mean you can only record and watch the same channel if they are on different mux 's.

the dearer box has a twin runner meaning you can record 2 channels and watch a third!

bar tht and the built in hard drive, the are pretty much the same!

I'd still hold off before you buy to see of these will work on Series Link

ah cool, nice 1. I don't mind not being able to record two and watch a third, and not having series link. So that cheaper one could be perfect - but the lack of HDD - I obviously could buy one but I heard anecdotally that some things (usually tvs with usb recording) have trouble when dealing with external HDDs that are over a certain capacity...ever heard of anything like this? Just thinking about a HDD to go with this... cheers

i use a 1TG USB powered hard drive and no problems at all.

the only issue i had was the the box formats the HDD in a Linux ext3 format. had to down load a driver for free to make it readable on my laptop. i now have over 100 movies on the hard drive and all my music on it effectivelly turning the set top box into a media center also

The newer Sony tv's support recording to HDD on drives up to, and I presume including, 2TB.

I purchased a walker saorview box recently with a hdd and similarly and cannot see the recordings on my laptop. Would you know if they use the same format. I'd like to be able to retitle match recordings by date and teams and competition rather than "sunday game live..".

    Thanks
    Tim

@Buckleytim, no idea mate sorry. I don't know if its any help but I used this article www.pendrivelinux.com/access-ext2-and-ext3-from-windows/ to make my harddrive readable on my laptop.

My settop box formatted the hard drive into a Linux EXT3 format thus makinging it unreadable on windows, by installing the driver linked above, it works fine now on both laptop an set top box

Walker uses Fat 32 or NTFS AFAIK. Partition some of it for Fat 32.
