Culture Night - Friday 23rd September

    Now is your chance to experience Limerick through culture as venues around the City throw open their doors to the public for FREE. The city is celebrating its rich arts and cultural life with a programme of events for Culture Night 2011. Museums, galleries, theatres, castles and other venues throughout the city will host free cultural events for members of the public to enjoy late into the evening of Friday, September 23rd. This is the fourth year Limerick is participating in this national event and new comers to the Limerick programme this year include The Frank McCourt Museum, Limerick Tango and The University of Limerick.
    Speaking at the launch at the Limerick Printmakers, City Arts Officer, Sheila Deegan, said 22 organisations throughout Limerick are involved and all the locations are quite close to each other.
    “You can walk the walls of Limerick at 5pm, then go to King John’ Castle and hear about the history, go to the Printmakers and print a tote bag or take a Tango Lesson or a drawing class or visit the Museum in Thomond Park,” she said.” We are delighted to have cultural street ambassadors for the night, look out for them and they will point you in the direct you to see all sorts.
    Cllr Jim Long, Mayor of Limerick said ‘I love Culture Night, its great to see families coming out together to experience the treasure of events that have been organised;
    “It is important to recognise what is in our doorstep and to appreciate our heritage and our culture. Often it is hard to find the time to support and enjoy the artists and organisations in the City but Culture Night is the time to go out there and share in the rich and diverse culture that exists here in Limerick. ”

    Walks of the old Walls of Limerick at King John’s Castle start at 5pm and take approximately one and a half to two hours
    The Hunt Museum, The Georgian House and Garden, Pery Square, King John’s Castle and Limerick City Museum will all open free to the public until 10pm.
    There will be traditional Irish music at Conradh na Gaeilge in Thomas Street from 5pm-10pm and of course the traditional "cupán tae" will be provided
    Hop-on Hop-off - Poetry on the Move - SpiritStore Art Project boards a double decker bus with their Poetry Depot for Culture Night.
    Members of the Royal Hibernian Academy Maeve McCarthy, Mick O'Dea and Una Sealy will lead drawing classes featuring live models at the University of Limerick
    At Limerick Printmakers, bring your own tote bag; get it printed, in the new spacious facility in Sarsfield Street
    Lots to see and do for free at The Hunt Museum
    Visit the Museum in Thomond Park
    Speak to artists in their studios in Contact Studios, Wickham street studios and Faber Studioso
    Meet the Authors at Limerick City Library
    See inside the recently renovated Limerick School of Art & Design
    Orchard Theatre Company and Limerick Youth Theatre will present - Journey to Performance a combined audio visual installation and live performance theatre highlighting the journey of young adults into the industry of professional theatre.
    A multi disciplinary body of work entitled Ubiety by Alan Crowley at Raggle Taggle Studios
    Limerick Tango will offer 16 lucky couples the change to have a one hour introduction to Tango

    Gonna pop in to the Printmakers new place, actually gonna try see a lot more this year as I was a bit late heading to this last year.

    I did the walk of the Walls of Limerick last year and found it very interesting I would recommend it for anyone that has even a fleeting interest in the city.

    Culture Night 2011 @ Limerick City Library

    There are two events organised in Limerick City Library on Culture Night Friday 23rd September.

    Firstly, there will be a Harp Recital by the Irish Harp Centre from 6.00 to 7.00pm which will be open to the public to attend.

    Then, from 7.00 to 8.00pm, there will be a 'Good Night Owls' Art Workshop for Children (4-12 years). Local artist Gráinne Moloney will be making owl party pinatas with children in the Children's Library.
    Numbers for this are limited to 25, so booking in advance either by phone (407510), e-mail (citylib@limerickcity.ie) or in person is essential.
